Would you sit at home on weekends (unless you work) in order to show the gas companies prices are too high?

25

I more or less would like to see how many in a survey of sorts or pledges, people would be willing to stay at home come Saturday and Sunday mornings in order to conserve gas/fuel. Think about it first before you think this is dumb and niave. The squeaky oil won’t get the oil so to speak unless us as consumers band together to stop fuel prices from being jacked higher and higher as our European neighbors currently pay. Get your groceries and other things before Saturday and Sunday and sit at home and spend time with your family this weekend and maybe for a few weekends. Please make your comments available. Remember in the US in the 70′s (or go search and read about it if you are younger) about burning our bras and being free. This is one of those moments. I am sick and tired of paying for the fuel and I want others also to join me in staying home and letting our gas companies think twice before they pass on the $4.00/gallon gas and taxes onto us? Who is with me here???
Think about this ok. If we eliminate wasteful trips going out to not only the grocery store and those other trips on weekends that we have put off till the weekend we will make a dent in this cause. Imagine people not popping in to a McDonalds, drycleaners, haircuts, for at least one full weekend or more if we need to make a real issue here. I don’t want to hurt the revenue of those that depend on those wages, such as the hairdresser and the waitresses who depend on tip money to make more an hour than the US and their states pay per hour. I don’t intend to be cruel here at all. I am not brilliant here, but I see that if this could be done, you darn well may be sure someone’s heads is going to roll come Monday morning after a wide wake up call. I agree with ride sharing and public transportation to all those who can. We don’t have to refuel the day before, just eliminate the wants on weekends and not the needs?

None of that will work. We are screwed. There is no alternative to gasoline. The government will have to step in or nothing will change. I would rather not spend so much money, but I make enough to drive where I want. Also, if you all stay home on the weekends, then I will go to the beach or to the mall where it will be nice to have less people!

fdj1 @ 1:46 pm #

well we should but that would take too much thought, you know
jees i wonder what color g string paris hilton is wearing……
that seems to be more important

Klaatu @ 2:33 pm #

This will accomplish zero.

Ray2play @ 3:18 pm #

Can I ride my bicycle ?

The Pale Rider @ 3:46 pm #

No. I wouldn’t. I have rich friends who’s parents buy their gas for them. That means that I am lucky enough that I can get a ride pretty much whenever i want. As for the rest of you, you won’t be able to do anything about gas by sitting on your asses. You’ll just be hurting yourselves by making your weekends suck.

SGT. D @ 4:43 pm #

You bet I would, don’t forget “no gas day” on May 15th. Make OPEC squirm!!!!

jim b @ 5:23 pm #

i agree with you all the way, i stay at home on my days off, but those are always random, also, dont pump gas of may 15th, it s a day that we’re trying to get as many people as possible to participate in, write it down, get a little bit of gas the day before, but not on may 15th!!!

Brian @ 6:16 pm #

Unfortunately they are, so I have to.

surlygurl @ 6:39 pm #

The message needs to be sent, but it will take mass action to make the boycott have any meaning. Please remember though, you don’t have to sit at home! Get out there and take the public transportation offered in your region. Get familiar with it, make it part of your lifestyle. That way you can take control of your transportation needs in an alternative way. Sorry I don’t live in the US currently, if I did, I would be boycotting for sure.

evilindependent @ 7:00 pm #

I have been doing that the last four weeks or so. It is the free market at work. I am not willing to pay the price, so I don’t. A higher price will always be the best solution to reduce consumption.

united_states_of_fatsos @ 7:48 pm #

Absolutely. In fact, I read about a “gas-out” day coming up on May 15 — http://dallas.craigslist.org/com/319148420.html — HOWEVER, according to snopes.com, it is an urban legend (see http://www.snopes.com/politics/gasoline/nogas.asp).

Nevertheless, I’m more than willing to participate in an organized boycott.

Don @ 7:58 pm #

No i will not help you!
I cannot waste my weekends for you!!!!

Jorge T @ 8:52 pm #

Yes, the idea is good. But it will be necessary for the gas to double before the population will join us, and the gas companies know that.
We elect our representatives. Have you lost trust in them???

youjustgotreported @ 9:47 pm #

People would just fill up the day before and it wouldn’t accomplish anything.

jamz @ 10:37 pm #

A few Senators are calling for a investigation in the raise in gas prices..I dlnt know what they will come up with But someone in the Goverment has to do something.. Everything is going up, gas, food, clothing, electric How is a family suppose to servive I know we are stuggling to make ends meat… Especially when the Oil companies are claiming higher Record profits this yr …. I think it was Exon claimed 287 BILLLION in profit for this quarter……THERE IS NO REASON FOR THE RISE IN GAS PRICES… The gas companies are claiming its becasue of old eqipment that they use and it keeps breaking down…… BU**SHetz I say…..
No more long traveling for me.. 2 miles up the road and back that’s it for a while…

citizenjanecitizenjane @ 10:45 pm #

I actually purchase less than 10 dollars worth of gas a week for my personal vehicle. We try to use as little as possible because we have a farm and anyway we can cut fuel costs, we do it.

jeeper_peeper321 @ 11:07 pm #

I want to know, why you blame the gasoline companies ?

Why aren’t you blaming the people who own the oil?

Like Canada, Mexico, Venezuela, Saudi, Nigeria.

You do know, the oil companies have to BUY the oil they refine into gasoline from those countries….right ???

The oil companies don’t control the price of oil.

This info comes from the State of Califorinia.

The cost break down of the prices of gasoline:

Marketing and Profits – $0.06
Crude oil cost – $1.50
Refining cost – $1.26
State and local tax’s – $0.26
State excise tax – $0.18
Federal excise tax – $0.18

Retail price – $3.44

Now do you see where the extra cost are coming from ???

wise.cracker @ 11:25 pm #

To be honest I stay home on the weekends anyhow, but it is not the gas companies Raising the gas prices ……it’s a stupid moron in the white house who is using the money from the gas for a war only he wants

supersafetyman123 @ 12:20 am #

Let’s think about this logically. If you sit at home during the weekends, how much MORE fuel will you use on Thursday, Friday, and on Monday & Tuesday? Everyone will still go where they need to go on the days prior to and after the weekend, so the amount of gas being used is the same. These type of “protests” don’t work (never have).

Acutally, we should be writing our state reps, senators, and governors to LOWER or ELIMINATE the taxes that are added to every gallon. That’s not the oil company’s fault. If our government would learn to STAY OUT of the free market, then prices would fall. But any good senator cannot pass up an opportunity to tax us on everything we need/use/consume. Actually, if you do the research, we should be THANKING the oil companies for keeping the prices as low as they are. Do you realize how much money it costs them to a) find the oil, b) drill for the oil, c) transport the oil, d) refine the oil, e) transport the refined gas, f) make sure every single safety measure and government regulation is being followed along the way? And it certainly doesn’t help that we haven’t seen a new refinery in this country in over 25 years, and our government will not allow the oil companies to drill for oil within our borders.

Oh, if your sick & tired of paying for high gas prices, then maybe you should seek other means of transportation (i.e. bus, bicycle, walking, etc.). I know you won’t, because, like most Americans, we all love our vehicles.

Justin H @ 1:11 am #

The problem with the proposition is it assumes everyone who stays at home would have otherwise filled their tank on the weekend and it assumes the oil companies would lose revenue by not selling as much gas on Saturday and Sunday.

The reality is once gas is delivered to a station the oil company is paid and the station is simply waiting to sell the product to generate their revenue – much the same as any business has to buy supplies before they can sell them. So really, it doesn’t matter to the oil companies if that gas is sold on Friday, Saturday, or Monday. Furthermore, for most people, skipping the gas station today only means they have to stop tomorrow or the next day. As long as our way of life depends on transportation and that transportation is powered by gasoline, we won’t make any meaningful dent in the amount of gas consumed.

If we really want to send a message to the oil companies, more people need to buy cars that get good gas mileage and decrease the amount of driving on a daily basis. So buy a Honda Civic instead of the SUV and find a job closer to home.

rt66lt: try for a second to think about 6 cents per gallon profit. The US consumes 360 million gallons of gas per day (from Wikipedia). That would equal about $21.6 million profit each day or about $7.9 billion profit each year. Maybe that number is low, but think how much would be added for each cent of profit per gallon.

Cheryl @ 1:26 am #

I suggested this a long time ago. But only a few people have done it….I being one of the few.

If people don’t unite it will only get worse.

My heart really goes out to the single mother’s who work for $8 to $10.00 or less an hour and have to pay per child $10.00+ for childcare and food, clothing, rent, utilities and gas for their cars. To me this is a form of slavery, preventing a person from obtaining their “American Dream”.

The scales are unbalanced and there seems to be NO justice for the poor working families.

I don’t know about anyone else, but I am tiered of trying to scrape up enough change to get some hamburger to feed my children, while those in office eat stake and lobster from the taxes we pay…(Taking food off our table to feed the rich.)

tip zz @ 1:54 am #

… do you mean while the Chinese and Indians gladly pay $60/barrel??????????????????????

rt66lt @ 2:48 am #

When gas got to $3.00 a gallon before, I stayed home and didn’t go anywhere on the weekend.

The agrument about the oil companies only getting 6 cents profit a gallon, this is absurd. The implication is that taxes are taking most of it (wrong). Those taxes (in Missouri, anyway) are required BY LAW (it’s now in the state constitution) to be used only for roads, which is what you are driving your car on anyway. The oil companies are making much more than 6 cents profits, which is the reason the Democrats are in favor of a windfall profit tax (which I fully support); this after the oil companies reported record profits last summer!

Butterbar Bob @ 3:27 am #

No, because it isn’t the gas companies’ fault that the price of gas is so high.

Look at the instability with the sources of oil – unrest in Nigeria, idiot-madmen running Venezuela and Iran and Russia, corruption in Mexico, etc. These have a tendency to drive up the cost of a barrel of oil. Sitting on your butt for 2 days won’t change this.

Next, look at the increase demand worldwide. China and India are increasing demand, and this has a significant impact on worldwide crude oil prices, too. Sitting on your butt for 2 days won’t change this.

Then there’s the fact that oil extraction has been prevented in this country by the Democrats in congress. We could drill in ANWR, on the small area originally set aside for oil extraction, but the Dems prevent that. We could drill off the coasts in the Pacific, the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic, but the environmental crowd won’t hear of it. How can we reduce foreign oil dependency if half the country is against actually drilling for oil? Sitting on your butt for 2 days won’t change this.

Then there is the crisis in refining capacity in the US. Environmental groups and Democrats have prevented oil companies from building a single new refinery for over 30 years. So, when the oil companies have to switch from winter to summer blends (state & local government mandated), from heating oil to gasoline, etc, the supply becomes short and the prices go up. Sitting on your butt for 2 days won’t change this.

Also, in the summer, there is increased demand from recreational sports (boating, etc) and seasonal work (lawn care, construction, etc) as well as increased vacation travel. This increased demand also drives up prices. Sitting on your butt for 2 days won’t change this.

The saddest aspect of this irrational jihad against the oil companies is that they are doing nothing wrong, and cannot control the world-wide price of crude oil, nor can they control demand, nor can they control government mandated “boutique” blends, all of which drive up the price.

Yes. I do that now. I’ve been staying home for the last
few years, because going places is a hassle.
And because ex-girlfriend of the Smith group
was always too caught up in choir. Those
are negative reasons for not taking trips. But when
gas hit 3 bucks last year, I was happy about making
a tank of gas last almost a month.

I see the number of SUV’s there are on the road
now. Especially in the town I live. It is true that self-
employed people, independent businesses, have
and use SUV’s. They also don’t have a problem with
driving clear across the continent. I know people
like this. They are prosperous. But anyway, sport
utility vehicles use more fuel than sedans. Not to
name names, but the Yukon is a big burner.

American families, who might actually try your idea,
will discover all kinds of hidden issues among
themselves. Or spend more time dealing with
issues that are already out in the open. That is
if they do a lot of pleasure trips. Mom or
Dad or Grandma and Grandpa might get on
Answers. Boy.

Just don’t expect for it to happen, unless people
in cities where carpooling is practiced by many.
It’s so much easier to expect some Agency to
change things than for the public to work together
and change things ourselves.
