would you give up the satisfying smell of gasoline to save $180,000 a lifetime?
This Darrell Dickey guy spent $45,000 on an electric car and a solar energy system on his garage roof and completely cancelled out his expense on transportation altogether. I just want feedback on what people think.

Really? $45 k on a car that needs approx $7-10 k in batteries every 2-3 yrs as well as a few grand for solar panels and more batteries to store the energy and the car cannot just get a boost to get it going, must be great in the snow. And you say he cancelled out his transportation expenses? Do the simple math. Tires still wear out and you still have insurance to pay for. every year that vehicle wears out more and more and costs 10 times more to fix. And you still have to plug it in every few hundred miles, great if you never have to go out of town. Get a bike or use public transit. This is not free transportation and most people that tried these cars 10 yrs ago have gone back to cheaper fossil fuels. And if all you save is $180 k in a life time, get a piggy bank cause that electric car will cost you that much in 1/5 your lifetime
stop sniffing gas not every one spend $180,000 in a life time what makes you so sure we will have gasoline for your life time where do you think all that money goes too and there will be a lot of changes in the next 5 years we could start to be taxed so we would have to switch to other forms of power the people will convert when they are made too some like dickey get a head of the pack is smart but i bet he is older then 50 so e already spent his money on gas he now has to start saving up for new batteries last I checked batteries for the electric cars cost as much as a KIA not saying to buy a KIA cause I’m not just like the hybrids if you buy a new car and sell it when it get old commonly 3 years the cost of the up grade is more then the savings in gas so it is still cheaper to waste gas then to buy hybrids
i am building an EV conversion on a VW car. its the future in my opinion. we have to get off of the petroleum fuel dependance before there is a riot or war in your own city. there is wood gas, biomass, hydrogen, biofuel, plug in and hybrid electric. CNG several alternative methods that we need to start developing and see what might be the best answer. the present cost of fuel and repairs vs upgrade technology should not be a main concern. we need jobs in the USA , and not wait until its a crisis to try and change average transportation issues. i want to be able to drive my beloved classic cars and trucks when gasoline and deisel is 8$ or 10$ a gaL ! ! ! whatever the powering mechanism happens to be swapped in. also, the average income will not keep any where near close to inflation and oil prices in the near future.
