Would we save on gas if they lowered the speed limit down to 55 miles an hour again?

I have economy idle on my car and I keep it from going up, I’m very gentle on the pedal right now. It has helped me.

Lowering the speed limit would not make people drive slower

We could but no one would drive 55. It would save more gas if SUV’s were banned from the hiway. But that would sure make a lot of people unhappy. Better to just slap a gas guzzler tax on them. Sort of what high gas prices are doing anyway.

Generally It is true that 50-60 Of car speed gives best mileage. But in case of Gas vehicles You can’t maintain a constant speed. Because gas will have higher explosion values than that of Petrol cars. SO speed increases slow even you control it. So Keep Speed limit so that you can achieve max mileage from gas

Horrible idea!!! People would still drive at an average of 75 mph, so we would just end up paying more in speeding tickets. We can save on gas by pushing E85. It’s made of corn which we don’t need to import from terrorists and it burns clean so it will help the enviorment.

55 stay alive?! What a crop of crap!!!!
Probably the same people who drive in the left lane and won’t let people pass them. You know what would save lives, if all the slow a/ss drivers weren’t allowed on the highways at all. You can do 50 on some country road. You obviously have the time and you can stay the hell out of the way of the people that actually have to get somewhere.

IF people obeyed the limits, then yes it would. Whether the savings would be significant is a different question. Also, would people be able to adjust to the longer time it would take to get places at the slower speeds? Making sure that everyone’s tire pressures are set properly is likely to save as much gas as lowering the speed limits.

no we would save on gas if we got rid of our corrupt government alltogether

hsueh001 @ 7:13 am #

Yes it would save gas and save lives! Drive 55 and stay alive!

I would recommend lowering speed limits back down to 55 and get a bunch of traffic cops out there to ticket people. As it is, there should be a bunch of cops out there ticketing people who drive over 70!

People would save alot of fuel doing this, However, if you look at the transportation times in the Trucking and Shipping industry, the COST to the economy would be tremendous. The cars can be built to get better mileage but weight is the big enemy of economy. Weight is a bigger enemy than wind load. Why does the guys CRX get about 42mpg…his 55mpg is with a tailwind downhill at 48mph. Because it is a little tin can! If everyone drove these little tin cans around the death rate on the highways would rise significantly. MY car? 98 escort wagon sohc 2.0 with a 5speed manual. My average? 36mpg.
