Would reducing our speed to 45 mph send a message that we have had it with high fuel prices?
The truckers (Knights of the highway) have set the example. Reducing our speed to 45 would save about 25% in fuel cost and about 10,000 lives each year.
Truckers, airlines and others will cut services or go out of business as one airline has just done. We will continue to pay higher and higher prices on everything.
A speed of 45/50 is the best speed for fuel economy and safety.
We have lost 4000 people in Iraq and about 200,000 people on the highways in the last five years. We never hear about the high cost in lives lost on the highway.

Doubling speed quadruples drag and fuel consumption.
Truckers are connected and will make a profit or quit. If they slow down, you will pay more. If they don’t move, store shelves will be empty. They are as essential as the fuel burned by their vehicles.

No, it would not. The truckers have done nothing but block traffic and further hurt their image (which is not good to begin with). What you (we) need to do is write your elected officials and tell them to stop kissing up to the oil industry.
Uuhh, no. It would just make me late for work.
JK!
I thought 55 mph was the most fuel efficient. Isn’t that why they put that into effect back during the fuel crisis 40 or 50 years ago?
This sounds good in theory but is not a realistic proposal to wean ourselves from fossil fuels. 45 mph is totally unrealistic as few motorists would obey this. Statistics such as lives saved is totally speculative and subjective as actual data does not exist for your hypothesis.
The government, not private industry, needs to make it a national priority to invest in alternative energy sources such as: hydrogen, electric, and renewable resources.
sounds like a plan, but i wouldnt do it. i pay about 50$ a week for gas and i always drive over the speed limit. i ussualy do 30 in a 25, 57 in a 45, and 70-80 is a 50. and 80-90 when driving in a 65 zone. But that how we all drive in NJ.
it would send a message to me that i am being held up by an arse …do the speed limit or sod off the road
First of all those truckers are stupid because most get paid by the mile and are mandated to only drive a maximum of 12 hours. So if they drive 45 instead of 65 they lose roughly 23% of their pay. If driving 45 actually saves fuel costs by 25% then they would still be losing money assuming that they make more money than gas costs. Good for the enviornment maybe, but it will never be lucrative.
