You might make sure its properly tuned up and running right and make sure you have the proper tire pressure that might help you save gas
Make it light. Take anything you don’t need out of the trunk.
Air up the tires to max sidewall psi. Or if you have big knobby tires, get more street oriented tires when your current ones wear out.
Lower it a bit. Every inch lower will effectively reduce its size to the wind.
Go easy on the gas. You can gain about 10% better mpg by having a real light touch on the gas pedal and doing the speed limit on the highway. I didn’t believe this when I read it, but I tried it anyway and picked up 3 mpg for free.
And oil addatives like STP usually cause more harm than good. Check http://www.bobistheoilguy.com for more on that.
Also use cruise control on the freeways, despite people telling you it uses more gas, it doesn’t.
Test you vehicle on other gases, I had a mustang that got better mpg’s on mid grade, but worse on premium.
Make sure you air and oil filters are in good shape, the better the engine runs and breaths the better mpg.
Add some STP oil treatment into you oil. It’ll make it run smoother due to less friction. Also slightly increases mpg
if it is a diesel engine you can switch diesel into what they call biodiesel. biodiesel is made out of waste vegeble oil and mix with b20 and some other chemical. you can save hella gas from doing this yourseft in the backyard.
Add a fuel optimiser or oil additive to give you more miles to gallon, eg, slick 50
STP is a oil thickner. DO NOT DO THIS for increased gas mileage. Slick 50 has damaged many engines due to stuck rings..including mine! Multi viscosity oils over straight weight good. Synthetic oils in differentials have shown reduced friction. What final gear ratio do you have? Going to a numerically lower ratio will DEFINATELY increase mileage, but can you afford the payback period?
I did see and small increase in mileage on mine with Split Fire plugs, but NOT the four terminal Bosch.
Tire Pressure – Put a chalk mark across the width of your tire and drive around the block. If the chalk is worn in the center air down. If it’s worn at the edge of the tire air up. You want the chalk mark to disappear from edge to edge. If you under inflate you will waste gas and ruin your rubber sooner. If you over inflate you will save a little on gas but will loose all of it a more when you have to buy new tires early.
Genital on the gas is a big money saver.
coasting to a stop instead of breaking also saves – this works great with manual transmission. Push in the clutch and glide to a stop.
Use cruise control and plan ahead for lane changes and exits.
Make sure your on the right gas – try regular – If it’s does not ping when you put your foot in it your good.
Keep a fuel diary. Mileage, gallons and date – I also put down the city and gas brand. This will also help identify maintenance problems before they get big. If your MPG drops off you know something changed.
Check your alignment – this saves on gas and tires.
Oil changes and routine maintenance – Get your owners manual out and double check that everything that was supposed to happen at 75,000 or 100,000 miles got done.
Tune up – annually check everything under the hood (more often for high miles) spark plugs, lube, oil, filters, radiator etc.
cruise control as much as possible, the “rumor” about not using the A/C is just that, a rumor, enjoy the A/C
