Would it be practical for a 16 year old boy to save up for a Honda S2000, and use it along with the car he has?

I am 16 years old, and I already have a beautiful 2004 Mazda 6s. I am extremely passionate about cars though, and I love the Honda.

I could get it really cheap too. I have money invested right now, and the investments seem to be paying off nicely. I could also get a job, and that combined with the money I already have, would enable to get this car.

But, do you consider that to be spoiled? Even though I worked hard for it? And would it be practical for me to own multiple vehicles?

Please respond. Thanks.
i’m not trying to impress anybody moron, i’m fulfilling my passion for cars, something you might not understand.

ever since i was really little all i could think about was cars, and that interest has only deepened as the years went on.

i’m not doing it as a financial investment, i’m doing it as a personal investment. i’m doing it because i’m very passionate about this, and it is a really good car.

It’s your money. If you want the car and can afford it, go buy it. Who gives a $%it if someone else considers you “spoiled”? It’s YOUR money, not theirs.

Keep in mind that investments (usually) increase in value over time and almost all cars drop in value like rocks. If you already have a reliable car you like it might be wiser to keep the money invested rather than putting it into another car. Then again, considering the stock market recently, maybe you’d be better off just lighting the money on fire for the heat it gives off…LOL.

Also be aware that the insurance premium on an S2000 is going to be significantly higher than the one on your Mazda 6. If you have them both insured at the same time it’s going to cost even more. Some states allow people to insure a car part time but other states require any registered car to be insured 365 days per year, regardless of whether or not it sits in a garage all winter etc., You might want to check into those laws in your state before doing anything one way or the other. Could be a difference of over $1000 per year in insurance costs…

My personal opinion is the S2000 is an inappropriate car for an inexperienced 16 year old driver. If I were your father I wouldn’t even allow you to discuss it. The Mazda6 is a fine car and should serve your needs quite well.

As fas as owning mutiple vehicles I don’t see the point. Who are you trying to impress? Save your money for college and your future. Taking your investment (savings) money and purchasing material items like cars isn’t what you need to be focusing on right now.

The s2k would kill you on insurance. You are 16 and you want to buy a performance car? But hey it’s your money. I was the same too when I was 16. =)

Do whatever you want with your money, but I wouldn’t. I’d go one way or the other, and here’s why:

First of all, greed or not, you can see what the perception of people on the outside already is…you’re being spoiled. Maybe you’re not…I don’t know, and neither does anyone else, but everyone still forms opinions whether they have facts or not. While the Internet means jack-ship, you may get that kind of feeling in school.

Second of all, there’s no need for two cars, especially at 16. On top of that, it’s not like these will be two daily drivers. If you’re passionate about cars, I’d be willing to bet tons that you’re going to try and work one of them–most likely the Honda. I owned a project car when I was 15. I thought I was doing it all right when I got the car for a steal and even did the work for myself. I’ll tell you right now, I don’t care how much you know about the S2000, it’ll become a money pit. Then, it’ll get worse. You’ll find something that needs to be fixed, but you won’t have the time (school, work, etc.), so you’ll have to spend the $. Then, you’ll have to spend the $, but not have the time. Ultimately, you’ll have a very expensive paperweight that you like to play with every once in awhile. I’m not saying that it’s a bad car or that you’d be a bad owner, I’m just saying at 16, there’s so much going on, that one of them will be neglected. What that means in the end is that you just bought a second car you didn’t need to.

Save your money–especially these days. Chances are good that you’ll either find one cheaper in the future. Enjoy one or the other for now, and as lame as it sounds, enjoy your youth too. You don’t want to be chugging away in the garage all your life at 16.

I have owned several S2000s and they are not the car for a 16 year old as they are real fast. An inexperienced driver (which at 16 you’re sure your great) can easily go from “wow” to “oh, sh^#”. Easy to die in it and insurance is expensive for an under 25. Most younger owners think they need to add a turbo or nitrous and take them street racing. The next thing you know they killed someone or themselves or at a bear minimum lost their license.

The newer S2000s are like a Honda on speed. The older ones are like a Honda on crystal meth. The tires are expensive and don’t last very long.

it’s actually a reallly bad idea

While you are passionate about cars now, you’re always going to want another car on top of the car(s) you have.

at this point in your life, you should be saving money in the bank for college, and with this economy, you want to ensure yourself enough money just in case something happens.

While the S2000 is a good car, the Insurance for a new drivier will be through the roof, and honestly there’s really no logic in owning two cars if your one person- two car bills, two gas bills, two maintenance bills and 2 insurance bills.
