Would a more powerful/thirstier engine save gas going up hill/towing etc.?
I was wondering. Let’s compare 2 different cars. A high mpg 4 cylinder compact vs a larger, somewhat thirstier 6 cylinder car. For the smaller compact, you gotta pedal to the metal to get up a hill. It takes much less effort for the larger engined car to achieve the same thing. I was wondering how the gas mileage would compare between the 2 cars in this situation…

This isn’t a car comparison, but I get better mileage with 5.7 V8 Chevy pickup going up a hill and towing 8,000lbs than with the same style (reg. cab longbed 4×4) truck using a 4.3 V6, because the V8 revs a lot lower at 45mph.
Lets compare the torqy Volkswagen Jetta 4cyl TDI with a 4cyl Honda Civic. That will yield some interesting results!
It will make more difference if the vehicle is FWD or AWD.
Also, the torque figure will be more important than the horsepower figure.
