not driving as much
Been doing some walking to places close by. I carpool when possible. My mom lives next door if she goes to store I go with her if I need to go. I make sure if I do go out I go to walmart shopping center and park in the middle so I can get all I need right there.
I just don’t drive anywhere and when I do I make a list of places I need to stop and make ne trip count for a bunch of errands, even if it takes me all day.
I bought a scooter last summer and I ride it as much as I can. It gets 65 miles to the gallon. I only drive my Dodge Neon when I need to carry passengers or if it’s raining. When I do, I practice economy driving like smooth starts, keeping at 65 on the freeway, and one thing that really helps me is to leave a lot of space between me and the car in front of me so I can drive without using the brakes so much. Brakes kill your gas mileage because you end up slowing down and speeding up a lot more. If you leave a big gap, you can slow down just by taking your foot off the gas and gradually speed up again, instead of being on and off the brake and gas all the time. It works, believe me. I used to get only 20-23 mpg out of that car, now if I try hard and drive really easy, I get 30 or more. Between my scooter and my car, I can go two weeks on less than 15 gallons of gas. Plus, riding the scooter is a lot of fun.
I drive slow in my blazer, which is easy because it’s old. Right now I get about 25 mpg so I push 400 miles out of a tank. In the past I had a teflon flush performed when I had my oil changed. That bumped me up to about 475 miles a tank for about ten tanks before the results trailed off. I also bought a motorcycle which is cheap, fun, fast and gets over 35 mpg even when you aren’t careful. Best of all I pull away with a full tank of gas at less than $12!
