With gas prices averaging $3.50 per gallon what can I do to make my car more fuel efficient to save money?
I drive a 2006 Chevy Cobalt. I am not made of money and filling the tank is hurting me financially.

Well, if something hurts stop doing it!
I have a rule, if my destination is within 5 miles ill bike their. I would suggest the same for you.
Well,
Getting a Hybrid won’t be worth it till gas prices are $4.50 so all you can do is wait. Or you can take the bus, carpool, buy fuel efficient car
None of the miracle things you pour in your tank, put on your fuel lines, stick under your hood somewhere that you see in magazines/online/late night TV dont do a thing so dont waste your money on them. Only thing you can do is drive it easy, drive like an old lady being very gentle on the gas all the time, it can make a BIG difference. Make sure your air filter is clean frequently too, otherwise what you see on the dealer invoice in the window when you bought the car are the best you are ever going to see.
A few suggestions:
1. drive more gently. look out ahead, coast up to traffic lights and stop signs. cruise at the slowest speed that the car will stay in top gear.
2. inflate the tires to the maximum on the side wall of the tire. the ride maybe a bit harsh, but you will get best fuel economy and tire life. (in other vehicles, you may need to maintain different pressures front and rear, but on a Cobalt, this is not needed).
3. change to a synthetic motor oil, check your owners manual, a 5W30 will provide better gas mileage than a 10W30. When you change the kind of oil; drain the old oil, replace the filter, put the new kind of oil in with a new filter, run the car about 100 miles, and change the oil and filter again. this is to prevent damage if the two oils react poorly.
drive slowley stop slowley build speed slowley will save more gas than all the gas saving devices
I’ve been adding 3 GALLONS of water everytime prior to fill up my 19 Gallon tank. It has saved me $145.36 so far. No problems with engine or running.
My advice is start off by getting a bike and using it for the short trips to the corner store or whatever. That should save alot if your the type to go to the corner store on car to buy a pack of smokes every day. Heck, walking would save you more.
Cut back on the car usage, but most important of all, take the residential routes and avoid boulevards or heavy traffic routes, that should save alot with the reduced stalling.
Finally, the cheapest alternative, move. If the cost allows it, you should move closer to the action or your job.
