This refers to when you’re coasting or when you’re going down a slope and in either case, you’re not pressing your foot on the accelerator.

No. If you put the transmission in nuetral while you are driving the injectors have to open up to keep the engine at idle. If your in gear the revs will keep the engine from stalling and the injectors shut off. Besides, it is dangerous to take a moving vehicle out of gear.

Hi,,

In a technical sense, yes, but it is so small that you would not likely be able to calculate or actually see an improvement in gas mileage. What you will do is put more wear and tear on the transmission and in the end you might not save anything with a big transmission repair bill over time.

Just leave it in D when stopped at a light.

best,
Phil

just leave in drive before you hurt someone or yourself.

Yes. Absolutely it saves gas, but if you’re going downhill and put it in neutral to coast, it can wear down your brakes sooner if you do it often enough.

I used to have a Corvette that had the instant-MPG gauge and I used to coast downhill sometimes just out of curiosity. While coasting downhill it would read 99-Miles Per Galon.

Unfortunately we can’t drive like that around here in South Florida – The Flat State.

No……It’s made to be driven in gear…..Going from D. to N. & back to D. will just wear out the transmission sooner…..
