Will this save me gasoline?

11

I was wondering if this would matter? Putting a full tank verse putting 10 dollars in every couple days? It seems the tank lasts longer if I fill my tank up ( i get more mileage to the gallon). But if I put 10 dollars in every couple days- it just goes, like I through money out the window.
So does it matter? Any other ways to conserve gas? Any studies I could read/ websites telling me about mileage and gasoline?

half-fill the tank

don’t accelerate too fast although move quickly through the gears into top gear as soon as possible.

try not to brake. look ahead and take your foot off the gas. each time you brake to slow down it takes gas to get back up to speed again. a little anticipation can save that

don’t overtake or accelerate hard going uphill

if a stop at a light is more than 30 seconds, switch off the engine.

Most vehicles do seem like they get better mileage when the tank is full. Actually there is no difference, it just seems that way because of the shape of the tank. The fuel tank is larger at the top than the bottom.

You are looking at you gas gauge which may not be accurate. Take miles and mileage and see. I would keep the tank 1/2 full.

Aside from maintenance, there’s really not much you can do.

Keep your tires inflated to the right pressure, take your care to get an alignment, make sure you replace your air filter and fuel filter every year or two. It’s just maintenance like that that’s going to make sure you get the best mileage that your car is going to get.

Well for me I get my best mpg in the first 1/4 tank. I try to keep it above that and I tend avergage better milage than drain the tank and then filling it up on empty. As far as I know almost ever car out there will get its best milage this way but I may be wrong, but it does work for me.

Your getting the same mpg if your tank is full or empty,it seems like it gets better because most tanks are bigger at the top then the bottom so it seems like your getting better mpg but it’s not…

With gas prices going ever upward, fill it. Prices here are $3.29 a gallon, tomorrow they will be up another 3 cents at least. What you might want to try is consolidating trips. Instead of running out every day, go once a week. I know commuting to work is a necessity but the short runs for milk one day, and pizza the next are what’s eating your gas. Also start your errands from the farthest point and work back from there.

@kerni
PLEASE DON’T! turn you engine off at stop lights starting it again will waste MORE petrol then being on idle.

if you want petrol to be a little cheaper do the following.

Buy a full tank only on the cheap days.
treat half a tank as empty on expensive days.

Also you are wrong about you saving gas with a full tank
you actually waste more gas on a full tank because of the extra weight.

The amount of fuel you put in will not, in itself ,have any effect on consumption. The way you drive and the condition of the car are the main factors. Lots of hard acceleration, tyre pressures below manufacturer’s recommendation, brakes not freeing when you release the pedal, hand brake partially on are all detrimental to economy. Unless you have an on-board computer the only way you can get a measure on fuel consumption is to fill the tank, zero the trip odometer and run the car normally i.e. give and take motoring for, say, 150 miles and then refill the tank and calculate how many miles per gallon you have done To get a reliable indication you should adopt this practise maybe 6 or 10 times and you will have a reasonably accurate average MPG figure.

Scotty @ 5:10 pm #

having a full tank of gas will give you less mileage as you have more weight in the car but it is very nominal you will never even notice.

mister ss @ 6:10 pm #

fill your car up early in the morning or late at night and when filling don’t pull the trigger all the way on the pump nozzle as somehow it adds more air to the tank filling it fast like that and by filling in the early morning or late at night you actually get more gas from what I have read, has something to do with the denstity of the air.
