Will this help you save gas?

Someone told me that if you’re running into a convenient store really quick (or a house, etc.) that you use more gas turning your car off than if you just left it running. Is this true?

It is true that is takes more gas to start than to just keep it running, but some states make it illegal to leave the car running with the keys in it. This is because the high probability of someone just getting in it, and driving away.

The rule of thumb has often been 2 minutes or less, keep it running. If you’re going to be somewhere for more than 2 minutes, especially during the hot summer, it is better to turn it off for risk of your car overheating. It’s not a great idea to leave a car running unattended for a lengthy period of time. It is also illegal to leave a running car unattended in some locales.

The likelihood of locking your keys in your car is increased, or your car being stolen, depending on where you live.

Its false and besides its against the law to leave your car running.

A_Renaissance_Woman @ 6:15 am #

It used to be true, but with todays more efficient engines, it is no longer true. Leaving it running also makes it easy to steal, and as many have already said, is illegal in many places.

marinespill @ 7:04 am #

It hasn’t been true since fuel injectors took over from carburetors.

mister ss @ 7:55 am #
