Will I save gas by putting my car in neutral?

I have an automatic and I’ve been putting my car in neutral at stoplights for a couple of months now and I’m wondering if it actually saves gas? I’ve heard that it can actually damage my transmission if it’s not a manual car.

No. Yes it can cause damage to your trany…

The gas savings is almost unmeasurable.

But you won’t hurt the transmission, unless you accidentally put it in one of the lower gears by mistake, and leave it there for a long time. (That would also kill your gas mileage.)

The possible savings isn’t worth the possibility of a shifting mistake.

To put the trans in neutral serves no purpose and saves no more gas than in park. Damage can take place if you put the trans into neutral when moving as in going down hill. If you do this the pump is not engaged and the fluid is not moving even though the parts are moving and this is how the damage can take place. Drive it normally and you will have the best results.
