Will disconnecting 4 wheel drive on 98 Ford Ranger save gas?

9

I have a 98 Ford Ranger and never use the 4 wheel drive. If I disconnect it, will it help on gas mileage at all? It sucks it down right now.

no just keep in 2wd….. if your not using it it wont do anything.. maybe you got a hole in your gas tank? put in it ur garage and put paper on the ground and check.. or maybe a hole in the lines….

yes-do not drive with the 4 wheel engage is no good,an Bern’s a lat of gas

no, you may even damage the vehicle, savings would be negligible anyway, convert to LPG if you are going to do big miles or just accept it, you have a big car

no, its always pulling the weight of the front drive components regardless.

maybe slightly, very very, slightly, IIRC that truck has vacuum hubs, the front CV joints are always spinning but don’t make a mechanical connection with the front wheels until the hubs are locked by vacuum. The amount of fuel saved by disconnecting the CV joints would very small maybe 0.3 MPG. It’s not worth doing.

This is the answer you are looking for!!!! First go to an aftermarket parts store and see if they have a wheel lock hub kit for your 98 Ranger { it locks and unlocks the hubs by hand from outside the truck } Then when you put it in 2 H the only thing you will be turning is the wheels just like the other 2 wheel drive trucks the only difference is the weight off the 4X equipment,,, and then you can lock in the hubs and use 4X when you want to. If you just take the front drive shaft off then you will Still be turning the axles and rear end with the front wheels.

No, because all of the components are still there adding weight to the vehicle. If you don’t need 4WD then why do you own a 4WD? Get rid of it and buy a 2WD model with a 4 cylinder engine to get better gas mileage. Even a 2WD with the 4.0L V6 still sucks gas because that engine is just a gas hog no matter what.

It’s not the disengaged 4WD running gear that is causing you to get poor fuel economy, it’s something else. When not engaged your front axles are not pulling HP from your engine. The system is designed to rotate freely when not engaged. The difference between an engaged and disengaged unit is a matter of 2-3 mpg or less; that’s in 4 High.
