Why is my 1992 BMW 325i burning fuel excessively?
This isn’t a major problem but this car will sometimes get horrible gas mileage during “city”-like stop and go driving. It averages 20mpg city but sometimes it will only get like 10mpg and I’m feathering the gas pedal but the things burning unessesarily rich or something and it pisses me off a little. There’s quite a few miles on the engine but it was recently rebuilt, save for the intake manifold, and the fuel injectors are stock I believe so I’m thinking maybe clogged/bad injectors? or fuel filter? Should I try injector cleaners first before getting a set of injectors? What is the best and most worthwhile fuel system/injector cleaner I could purchase from autozone? Thanks a heap!!

spark plugs, air filter, fuel filter, fuel pump.
this car has three sensors to calculate te gas mileage
O2 sensor
air mass sensor
and the problem my gess is coolant sensor
Is your Check Engine light on? I would want to first query the onboard computer to see what it’s seeing. Since the fuel control is a matter of:
1. Correct information getting to the computer.
2. Correct control of the injectors by the computer
3. Correct feedback from the oxygen sensors to the computer.
I would want to know who exactly is the culprit before just swapping out expensive parts.
Of course, make sure the overall state of tune is correct…good plugs, air filter, fuel filter, etc. and that the engine is still healthy.
Don’t use injector cleaners because mostly they don’t work unless you buy a high end one…
First check your spark plugs and wires. If those aren’t the problem try checking your air filter then your fuel filter If those aren’t the problems then try checking your O2 sensors… Find out if your car is ODB1 or ODB2… being that your car is a 92 I believe it would be ODB2 which means they can put a computer up to it and your cars computer will tell it if there is a problem… Also what grade of fuel are you running, certain engines won’t run properly on low grade fuel…
