most will say a cleaner environment…but that depend,s on the hybrid you choose….monetarily there is no advantage…saving gasoline can reduce our dependence on foreign oil. according to your figure,s you will need to keep the car for 10 year,s just to break even…the average life of a vehicle is now 13 year,s…but those last 3 year,s with a worn out vehicle make,s it doubt-full the saving,s will be near the amount that the math suggest,s.
Other than the smug sense of superiority and condescension all those Prius drivers have? Nothing.
In the cold light of day, there is no true advantage to hybrid technology right now. Barely any savings in fuel, higher cost to manufacture, and a larger carbon footprint than that of a similar non-hybrid vehicle.
I find that most people who buy them do so for the ‘feel-good’ factor. They think they are being environmentally conscious. But when all the facts and figures are laid out, you are better off with an economical, internal combustion vehicle like the Yaris, Versa, Aveo, etc than you are with the hybrid.
Marketing is a wonderful thing.
ADD: I wanted to post this clip from Top Gear – the fuel economy of a Prius compared to a BMW M3. TO sum up and paraphrase Jeremy Clarkson, ‘It’s not WHAT you drive, it’s HOW you drive!”
