Why do people still speed with gas prices?

6

Now that fuel prices are above two dollars a gallon people still drive at break neck speeds between 75 and 90 miles per hour on their commutes or anywhere for that matter. Why? I dropped my speed from 70 MPH to 65 MPH and have increased my mileage a great deal translating into less fill ups and more money saved. I am by no means an environmentalist, I am just worried about my wallet. Just curious more than anything. I figure people would do anything to save money.

some people dont care about how much gas prices are. They speed because they like to be the fastest on the road and they like to show off

Gas prices don’t bother me all that much and I drive a very fast car because I like the adrenaline rush it gives me. I won’t be slowing down to save myself 0.5 MPG anytime soon.

On the freeway? you have a point.

In town, if the traffic signals are timed properly, I’ve found that going a couple mph above the speed limit enables me to catch most of the traffic lights on green.

Not too many mph over the speed limit, you’ll break out of the timing.

definitely not too slow…you’ll start catching yellows and then you’ll nail every light on red.

So, in my opinion, catching every light on green at 43mph in a 40 saves more gas than catching every light on red at 35 mph.

The only real problem is the intersections that are red light camera controlled. The private companies that run those things change the timing an shorten the yellow light to maximize profit…at the expense of your safety and fuel economy.

Time is money. Personal comfort and convenience is worth more than a few bucks — which is why you are in a gas-guzzling cage.

I get 50mpg city / 65mpg highway, while out accelerating 99% of what is out there and keeping up with speed of traffic.

It’s disassociation of costs from the activity that incurs the cost. You only feel the pain at the pumps, not while you’re driving. It takes discipline to remind yourself of what that lead foot is costing you.

This is the problem with credit cards and with toll tags. It’s also why public transit wants you to use their new RFID cards to pay your fare, so you don’t realize how much you’re really spending when they hike up the fares. The busfare is now $4.50 one way where I’m at, it costs less than $3 in gasoline to drive to work so unless I sell my car, public transit is actually more expensive, all because people don’t notice how much it’s costing them when they climb onto the bus.

Because habitual speeders are in desperate need of an attitude adjustment that will happen sooner or later. Either they will cause an accident, loose their license, or something worse. The price of fuel isn’t their problem, it is their lack of reasoning ability. Also there are problems with those who drive noticibly slower than the general flow of traffic.
