Why do people still drive to work and home at 75 mph, even when gas was over $3 a gallon?
There is a limited supply of gasoline. It takes like two extra minutes to drive 15 miles at 60mph, and you can save a tenth of a gallon or so. Multiply that by the millions of people that drive fast to work each day, and you are talking real conservation, with little penalty.

because they have no concern for what is going on in this world.
Because it feels wrong to drive that slowly – of course one would only travel at 75 mph when legal.
Also, in my car I can’t do 60 in 5th gear, its barely ticking over – so the revs are the same for 60 in 4th and 75 in 5th.
What really kills the gas isn’t the speeding its the waiting in traffic at either end.
What we need to do is increase gas to $5 a gallon to really reduce the number of people on the road and then you’re talking real conservation.
Some people are always late for work. Some people have a 50 mile commute and really want to get home. Others just like the thrill of going fast. Some are impatient. Some… are just not paying attention.
In the 1970′s a number of countries lowered their speed limit to conserve fuel.
Out in New Zealand the limit was dropped to 50mph for over 10 years.
Oddly enough, they are thinking about it again.
They are ‘going along with traffic’.
