Why do new cars have the same gas mileage as old cars?

7

I have a 1994 Honda Accord with 170K miles that gets 22 MPG city and 31 Highway. What incentive does buying a new one have on saving gas?
Why do I need a faster car? This one costs less than 2000 a year in repairs. a new car payment plus full insurance is nearly $6000 a year at 380 a month and 1500 insurance. I have power everything except remote trunk opener. I dont need an alarm anymore and, except for faded paint, its still in excellent condition.

None whatsoever

The incentive isn’t fuel economy, it might be reliability and the absence of unexpected repair expenses.
I don’t know if that justifies the new car payments, but there must be a good reason why people continue to trade in perfectly good cars for new ones all the time.

Provided the older car is maintained and not grossly outside of factory spec, it shouldn’t vary too much from a new car. Anything not maintained can have wildly varying results.

none ,,people buy for many reasons..
1 tired of old one
2 old car is crappy
3 too many repairs,,not dependable
4 want differnt feachers…[power windows,,i love them] AC,power seats..steering…radio…color

my old pick up truck gets same mpg as new one,,,but rattles,,broken radio,,heat controls broken,,needs shocks,,waterpump…starter grinds….if i get new it isnt because of mileage

Not much on saving gas. But, the upside of a new car is you don’t have to get down on your knees to scrape that possum, that’s really starting to smell bad, from your right front wheel well, you don’t have to clear all the old french fries and half eaten McDonald’s burgers from the cracks in the seats. Most importantly, you won’t have to try to drag out all those empty 1/2 pints of Jack Daniels from under the front seat.

1. Old cars need to be fixed more often because things have worn out.
2. The new Accord is faster and better handling than yours.
3. New cars are far safer than old ones in an accident.
4. New cars produce far less pollution.
5. The new one has lots more room than yours.

Don’t forget that the new rating system is far more accurate than the old one. The old one produced some pretty inflated numbers on some cars.
