Why do most Americans drive big gas hogs ?

11

IIt’s ridiculous look around you when your driving on streets or highways their are Big Gas wasting vehicles , SUV’s, Monster trucks, large cars with V 8 or V 6 engines. I don’t understand I thought we were trying to conserve. Look around a typical parking lot young women struggling to park these tanks like cars and trying to fit them in regular car parking spaces.
Gas prices are very high and most people still but gigantic gas hogs. What going on here?

There was a trend to own a huge gas guzzler a few years ago as a status symbol like hummers and range rovers, but I think the “cool thing” now is to have a hybrid, and that smaller car sales are on the rise. Large SUV’s are tacky and in poor taste these days (as they always were to people who care about the environment). I think the people that still buy them are republicans that hate the world and fat people who can’t get their lazy asses into anything else.

Yeah, they are stupid, or have more money than sense. Also they may have bought them, when gas was a lot cheaper, and let’s face it, fewer people are buying those gas hogs, and those that did buy them, are stuck with those monsters, as they more than likely, took out a five year loan on them, with little down. or even nothing down, a bit like the Housing Market.
Now they are left with a SUV, that they owe more on than it’s worth. They can’t sell it of trade it in, as the money the lose can amount to more than they can afford.
So for now, they are stuck with them, at least until they pay them off, and for now, all they can do, is cut back on their driving, and drive a lot more carefully, and do what they can to increase their miserable gas mileage.

Because america is better and smarter than you thats why!

because we can. al gore lives in a very large house and flies on private jets. what is your point.

Gas prices aren’t “very high” for a lot of us. Many people have no trouble filling up their tanks.

It’s very simple. Is saving maybe $50 – $100 / month in gas worth the sacrifice that one would have to make by going to a fuel efficient car. That means less power, less room, zero towing capacity, having to find a friend with a pickup truck every time I want to go to Home Depot, etc. No thanks, the extra cost in gas is well worth it for me and many others.

Quite frankly, fuel efficient cars aren’t *that* fuel efficient for me to bother. Even hybrids aren’t nearly efficient enough for me to bother with them (not to mention the extra cost you pay upfront makes them even less worth it).

Because we have families. I would perfer to drive big safe cars to protect us from those little rice grinders driving like idiots!!!

T DEE @ 3:35 am #

Wow… You call a V6 engine a gas hog… Obviously you have no idea what cars actually are, nor does it seem you live in the same world as the rest of us humans… Don’t believe everything you hear on the liberal news. And definitely don’t comment about it on yahoo… You just embarrass yourself…

not to be a d bag to all the tree huggers but if we can afford it whats it to you and as someone pointed out al gore has a private jet and as far as tacky goes i think driving a toy car as small as a smart car is tacky and if we like the look its our opinion and also someone pointed out the family thing and space also if we have to tow something or go off road im sorry but your hybrid prius is screwed its all about personal preference and what works for you

I don’t care about conservation, for one. In 100 years, we used less than 10% of the worlds oil supply, so why conserve? My 300hp V8 car gets 26mpg, which is great. It’s better than my 128hp 1.8L I-4 did, because I had to drive the 4 cylinder so much harder just to keep up with traffic. So it really comes down to choice. I drive what I drive, because I want to. It’s nobody’s business but mine. Why? Because I’m the one paying for it. And FYI, I pay $2.75/gallon for premium gas. That’s cheap. So where’s this expensive gas at?

it’s the funniest thing seeing a little girl driving a big truck.

SUV’s are needed if you have fairly large family, ~ 5 or so or more

Trucks are needed if you are a contractor/ have a farm/ constantly hauling a boat/trailer/anything like that

you need that V8 engine in your truck if you are going to be hauling heavier loads

One of the key advantages of a V6 engine is its relatively compact size. Although it is wider than an inline engine, a V6 is only three cylinders long, and shorter than an inline-4 cylinder engine

I VERY rarely see monster trucks

and if you are some douchebag scum bag who doesn’t work on a farm, haul heavy loads and still drives that F-350 diesel, then I think you are probably trying to overcompensate where you are lacking.

but if you truly need the truck, than get it.

But don’t use that argument England uses all these mini cooper smart cars things

well, we have a hell of a lot area than ya’ll do

31 of our states are bigger than their country

but until you can get the power of a v 8 into a four cylinder, I do not see a change anytime soon
