why cant the auto makers refine the car/truck transmissions to lower the rpm’s to get better gas mileage?
logic detates that if the gear ratio to the RPMs of the engine are more insink the we could save MPG. For trucks/pickups there could be a hi/low transfer case to give power when needed and when power is not needed switch to higher gears and increase MPG to save fuel .

They already do with overdrive.
But there comes a point when the engine RPM is so low that there no power to push the car / truck.
Good luck…
It’s called an overdrive transmission. Every automatic I own came with one.
you can do that now if you drive a stick. upshift too early and then engine bogs down. you can help that somewhat with an engine with better low end torque but that might mean more fuel.
