Recently UPS has encouraged their drivers to steer to right more than left and coordinate their delivery routes accordingly to save on cost of fuel.

So they do not have to wait crossing traffic for the left turn according to the local driver

The direction a vehicle is steered would have no effect on economy. Someone is pulling your leg. Although right turns are safer than left turns for the most part.

This may not be helpful, but it sounds like a classic urban legend to me.

What a load….

Maybe less time waiting to pull out turning left? A little bit adds up over millions of miles.

I’m not sure if there is any truth to that, but I would say that it saves you having to stop and wait for traffic to clear. To make a left turn, you have to cross oncoming lanes. Unless you get lucky, you usually have to stop and wait for the oncoming traffic to clear. That is time spent with the engine idling. After the traffic clears, you have to accelerate from a dead stop. There is one major hole in that theory: if you have to stop at a light or a stop sign, you still have to stop, and start again from a dead stop. In that case, it doesn’t matter which way you turn.

they probally save fuel because they dont’ spend as much time idling in the left turn lane.
