The federal government relaxed CAFE standards for domestic automakers as profits from large, gas-guzzling SUV’s increased profits.

As you see, Toyota, Honda and Nissan focused on producing innovative small cars with good gas mileage that now capture a lion’s share of the market.

I am not bashing domestic (North-American) autos as I recently purchased a new Chevy Malibu that despite a 252 hp V-6, I’ll still average nearly 28mpg.

if you compare fuel economy to horsepower, then efficiency has increased per horsepower.

My 1991 Lotus Elan (1.6l turbo) had about 160hp and got 25mpg on average. My 2007 Mazdaspeed3 (2.3l turbo) has 260 hp and gets about 25mpg average even though it’s a much bigger car with more horsepower.

its the government limiting how many miles a vehicle can get.

in asia and europe, there standard cars get like 40-50 miles to the gallon and there hybrids get more.

when automakers like toyota and honda come of to the US they have to redesign the engine to stay within the US standards.

like how you cant import cars from asia and it be street legal
