Where do you draw the line between an economical car and a safe car?

Some may disagree, but big cars are safer, little cars are more fuel efficient. I want to stand a chance of walking away if I get hit by a Tahoe, so I prefer a car with a little more girth.
I’m not sure how some of these high mileage, economical, small cars will fare, even with multiple airbags.
I would never forgive myself if something ever happened to my family while driving a tiny car. I choose safety over economy, and cannot justify sacrificing safety for a few dollars in fuel savings. I do want to save the world, also, by using less fuel, but have to be alive to do that.

Get a mini van. They have more metal than the average econobox, have room to carry a family, usually have a decent suite of airbags, and can still get decent mileage. They also stand tall enough to be visible on the road, and to give you good visibility of the situation, especially compared to a small car that sits low to the road.

We were hit head on by a Semi Truck some years ago and we walked away from it…well pretty much, we walked to the ambulance. We were driving a {GASP} Geo Metro and it did what it was designed to do , it crushed the front and bowed the floor down and roof up but the firewall stayed intact. After that one I’m not the least bit worried about small cars versus large “Tahoe’s” etc.. Pick the car that has a decent crash test rating and covers all your other needs as well.

Ride a bike, save the world

ALL cars are unsafe, then again so are bikes.

So, here is your solution..

Older Mercedes DIESEL!

Since its a Mercedes, its built like a tank and safe.

Since its a Mercedes, it will outlast any other car on the road!

since it`s a diesel, it get 30 MPG IN TOWN!

since it`s a diesel, you can run it on Biodiesel, and save the world.

Since it`s a diesel, the engine will run for a million miles!

I don’t nessesarily agree with you on crash-ability. Check out the crash test rating on the vehicle that you are considering. Usually a tough on will have 3-4 or more stars. Volvo makes a point of integrating safety into all of their cars. A 4 star car is the best…Some american cars are also 4 star rated…so check it out!! It really all depends on the frame and how well it is reinforced…not nessesarily how big it is…

I say buy a VW Jetta TDI Turbo diesel with lots of torque. A dog it is not with decent acceleration. Safest car in it’s class along with more airbags available plus the front crumple zone.

10 year body perforation guarantee along with the fact that the engine will go 500,000 miles with proper maintenance.

40 mpg around town, suburban driving, and if not overloaded with option packages, it may still be under $28K or $29K next year .

They keep pushing back the new model into 2008, but i believe it’s worth the wait.

i dont think that the words “car” and “safe” will ever be able to work together. even serious race cars (nascar,funny cars,dragsters) with the latest computer designed chromoly roll cages have fatalities. there is no way to “buy” safety. just drive your best and be mindful of all the other geeks on the road…

A bigger car is less safe for the people outside of it. As there are many more cars of which you are outside of and maximum one car you are inside of, it is safe to conclude that smaller cars are safer.
