if you have a tachometer
then each gear no higher than 4000 rpm
and/or change gears every 10 mph
1 st to 10
2 nd to 20
etc.
Unless you are needing to get out of the way because someone is trying to hit you, try shifting and see if you can still pick up speed relatively easily. This will help you determine the RPM that you will need on your model. If the engine lugs when you shift, it is too early, and drop back down one gear (like if you were to go into 5th instead of 3rd). This is different in all cars, however, it will be somewhere around 2500-3000 RPM.
I have an 05 Honda and shift usually at 4000 (however, I red-line at 7000 and like to go fast.
If I am trying to save gas, I will shift at a little over 2000.
I do not look at the tach when I decide to shift, it is all on sound, and feel.
To save fuel, it is best to shift as soon as possible, without lagging the engine down. BMW did a study on this.
But what fun is that????
The most fuel economical shift and cruising RPM is 2/3rds of your engines peak torque. To find your torque rating, check your owners manual in the glovebox. If your engine makes peak torque at 5200 rpm then the most economical cruising/shifting rpm will be 3465 rpm.
