What’s The Best Option For Saving Gas Mileage On My ’02 Mountaineer?
Didn’t know if maybe a K&N intake system would work better than a Supertchip, and do they even make a chip of some sort for gas saving on my 4.0L Mercury Mountaineer. Everything advertised talks about better horsepower or better torque, not really concerned about that right now.

There is a fine balance between horsepower and fuel mileage. Sometimes to achieve better MPGs you need more HPs to move the hunk of metal around. It makes the engine work less saving fuel. Before you go spending money try some free things first.
1. Tire pressure, make sure they are inflated to the proper psi/kpa around 30-35psi should be sufficient.
2. Wheel alignment, improper alignment can cause unnecessary rolling resistance.
3. Lose some curb weight, If you don’t need it in your vehicle take it out.
4. Driving habits, for lack of a better way to say it, drive like an old man or woman. Easy on the go pedal. We had a customer complain of a consistant 14MPG in their car, we sent a driver (older gentleman) on a 75 mile trip to check MPG. When he got back we filled the car back up and it averaged 24MPG. Not saying that you drive your vehicle as hard as the customer did, I’m just showing what is possible.
If you do all this and MPG doesn’t go up then maybe think of vehicle maintenance, a tune up can do wonders as well. Or maybe trading the vehicle in on a small car. The Mountaineer should only average around 14-17MPG in town and maybe 17-20MPG on the Highway (my guesstimates, maybe more or less).
I would not invest in any do-dads to put on my engine. Just more to go bad. Drive the vehicle more conserative and the gas will stay in the tank longer. Mountaineer is geared for towing and has a 370 rear end for power not speed. Lower the rear end gear ratio and you will have more speed and less power good for highway driving..
