What’s a good solution to my commuting costs?

2

I commute 90 miles each way to work and I need to save some of this money! Quitting my job or transferring is not an option. I already bought a fuel efficient car (38 mpg), but I’m thinking about staying in the town where I work for a couple of nights a week!

Are there special hotels or extended stay business suites? Any affordable solutions to stay where I work for a couple of days?

It would probably be a wash– you can get weekly rates at motels for as low as $24/day. But you would have to pay for a whole week to get that rate. That would be about $170 per week- or just about your weekly cost in gas.
The only way to beat the cost is to permanently move. Even then- you must find a place to stay for less than $600/mo -assuming you drive back home on the weekends. Of course you would save the wear and tear on your car.
One possibility you may want to consider–think about moving within walking distance to your job. Then you could get rid of the car.
If your situation is temporary anyway–you may just have to hang tough til it changes.
You are doing the right thing–weighing your options. Remember this!!!- math works. Put it down on paper- add up the gas/car note what ever. Does you car really get 38mpg?? check it all out. Assumptions can make your math not work.
Good luck-

Check with your employer and see if they have a corporate account with any of the hotels close by . They usually do so they can accommodate out-of-town visitors . All you would need is Sun. thru Thur . That cuts the mileage down to 180 miles per week or less than $20 per week for fuel . If push comes to shove, ask and see if anyone would take you in as a boarder, sharing food and expenses.

All the best.
