what modifications can i make to my trucks engine to save gas?

ive got a 1974 gmc sierra with a 454 big block. waste a looooot of gas. is there any mods i can make to the truck so that it doesnt waste a lot of gas?

Change the rearend gear ratio.

If you have a modified carb take it off and go stock. As long as you change the air filter regularly, keep the timing good and do a tune up every six months there really is nothing else you can do. Maybe a K and N filter would help a little but not much.

No matter what you do to that engine, it will waste gas. It was designed in an era when gas was cheap and plentiful (it pre-dates 1974 by at least, what, 20 years?) to provide an obscene amount of raw horsepower and torque. It is carbureted, probably has valves and cams designed around the aforementioned power mentality, not fuel sipping. You want to modify your truck to be more efficient? Go to a salvage yard and find a fairly recent small block with fuel injection (and computer, and drive train) and trade it out completely. Even better, a Duramax diesel. Of course, for what that will cost you, you’d be better off trading that beast in for something new(er), smaller, and designed with at least one eye on efficiency…
