Cheap fuel will cause more deposits on valves and in the cylinders. If you don’t mind some carbon knock later use the cheap stuff.

If you are interested in better fuel economy in your 500 SEL, try driving on the freeways and turnpikes without going over the allowed speed limits. The biggest variable in fuel economy is the driver’s foot on the gas pedal. Maintain a steady speed, avoid stop and go situations, drive at night when it is cooler, avoid jack rabbit starts and urban traffic.

Benz recommends premium (91 or higher octane) unleaded.

While you “can” use a lower octane fuel, it is not recommended. What happens when you do is that the knock sensor detects the lower octane and retards the spark plug firing to compensate. This does 2 things: 1) it lowers the engine power output and 2) it uses more fuel (thereby negating some of the savings of using a lower priced fuel in the first place).

The long term effects of using a lower can be more severe including engine damage. Stick with using premium octane fuel and save money other ways, such as sticking to, or close to the speed limit, using cruise control, making sure the tires are properly inflated, etc.

It’s not ok to put regular in it because it is a v8 and if the octane isn’t high enough it will have premature combustion and cause the car to buck and latter in the future damage the engine.
