should i only have the heat on in the room i’m in, or leave it at the same temp in all rooms while home, and turn down in all rooms when away.

Heating only the room you’re in would use less energy than heating your whole house.

Other energy-saving tips:
Check for drafts around doors and windows and seal any that you find. Insulate you windows with thermal curtains or window-wrap, or both. Replace your shower head with a low-flow shower head to reduce the amount of hot water you use.

You can also get a humidifier. Dry air feels colder, so you don’t have to turn the heat up as high if your air is humidified.
