What is more efficient? Leaving your car on overdrive or without it?

I have a Toyota Camery ’91. I’m just trying to save gasoline and I don’t want to screw up anything, so what’s the best thing to do?

I usually leave it on because if I see a sign that has a limit of 35 I go at 40 and my car will go into OD so I will go at around 40mph at around 1500rpms as opposed to 3rd around 2250. Of course this should also depend on the traffic, etc. I think it’s a worthless feature to have to turn od on or off because it really doesn’t do anything and some city roads allow speeds of 40+ mph which in that case OD would save you fuel. OD is just a fancy word for 4th gear. Without it your car is only operating with 3 gears.

The only time when it should be off is if you need more torque, but I don’t think anyone would be doing towing with a compact car and even in the winter most of us do is just start the car locked in 1st or 2nd gear… yeah.
