What internal engine modifications will save gas?

4

OK so I know that having the head milled down will give a little better mpg. I am wondering about cams and other things inside the engine that might save on gas.
I was actually asking about a ford focus. I have the car with the engine out now. I was thinking if I can do some mods and help it . I will than take what I do and put it towards the Jeep.

Port n Polish which is make it more exhaust gases to exit easier or try K&N Air Filter they will increase your mileage

make sure tire pressure is good and what it says on your tire that will save mileage

pretty much porting your heads and making the exhaust escape easier will help your mileage Alot my uncle did it and he got prob 5 -10 more mileage on his car

better gas milage in a wranger ? (from your previous question)
yes I guess those will help but probably most of the gas savings will come from the truck having to haul around less weight (Your wallet will be much lighter)

Milling the head will also increase your compression and that WILL increase your NOx polution production

on the cam idea, that would drop your fuel economy unless you went to an even smaller lift. that thing was designed for optimum fuel economy. leave it alone and stay away from the floor board.

An experienced head porting service will blend the bowl floors and raise the ports Polishing ports is a thing of the past. A competition five angle valve job will wake up any set of heads. Aftermarket pistons with blended valve reliefs to match each valve will keep the flame travel in the center of the pistons will help. Combustion chamber work to un-shroud the valves will help.

Bare in mind the intake manifold must be port-matched when the heads are done. If you contemplate a cam switch rely on an engine builder for help. Added duration with reduced lobe centers will ruin engine vacuum and your power brakes. Faster rate of lift and added lift within reason will help power but hurt fuel economy.

For now a good tune-up will help and a switch to your factory recommended oil viscosity plus full synthetic motor oil
