its like having an extra gear in the car and it drops the rpms of the engine down a lot, that’s how it helps with gas mileage, the less rpm,s any engine runs the more has mileage it will get, that’s been a proven fact, that’s why all newer cars come with overdrive, its for faster travel with less gas consumption, good luck.

when you use overdrive, you are like coasting, taking the strain off of the motor and tranny, thats where you get better gas milage, because you dont have to give it so much gas to go.

overdrive is achieved any time the output of the transmission is turning faster than the input. the only drawback is the fact that you mathematically loose most of your power. which means, the less you have to spin the engine, the less fuel you have to burn. at almost $4.00 A GALLON any thing will help.

dogd man is right – it cuts the use of fuel by giving you an extra gear cutting down on the rev counter.
$4 a Gallon? I wish. In the UK we pay $8.60 – and that’s due to go up on Wednesday in the Budget…. :-( ((
