2004ish VW jetta TDI. i have one with a manual transmission that gets 57mpg. a auto will get bout 48
How about a Prius? You would get close to 50 mpg and the new battery technology should last you for the lifetime of the car. If you don’t like a Hybrid, then take a look at the new Elantra. You would get 29 city and 40 mpg on highway. It’s a great car that picked by many reviewers. Otherwise, you can’t go wrong with a Civic.
Are you talking new or used? Avoid the Vibe by the way. If you can swing for new, the new Ford Fiesta or Mazda 2 are well built, affordable, fun to drive gas zippers. If you are looking for a great used deal you can pick up a Saturn Astra dirt cheap since GM killed the brand. They are sporty and fun to drive, they are really German Opel Astras with a Saturn grill. I picked up one to use as a work car. I get about 33mpg combined, and have only seen one other on the road.
The toyota corolla is a reliable car and has very good fuel economy…..buy it.
