What do I need to know about carrying drums of diesel fuel through Canada?
I will be driving through Canada this summer with a truck and trailer, and to save on the high cost of diesel enroute, would like to bring along four 55-gallon drums of diesel (in approved diesel fuel containers). However, I can’t find much in the way of guidance on what regulations or limits exist in Canada regarding this. Any help/guidance would be much appreciated. Thanks.

I don’t know about Canadian laws specifically, but usually you have to have a special class license and special permit to transfer large quantities of fuel not contained in the fuel tanks of the vehicle. In general, though, you won’t be stopped and questioned just for driving with a trailer. Out of site equals out of mind, though. Don’t plan on crossing into or out of Canada with that fuel, so if you were planning on purchasing it in the U.S., you’ll won’t be allowed to cross the border. And don’t even think of transporting fertilizer with it unless you enjoy being interrogated!
Any gasoline or oil imported into canada beyond the normal capacity of your vehicle is subject to duty….
“Duty” is the same as tax.

Plus, diesel is a flammable hazardous material, & any ‘extra’ drums like that require the trailer & the truck be placarded for transporting the HazMat materials. From all the problems mentioned, might not be such a great idea….sorry.
