What can I do to my 1975 Ford Club Wagon Van to save on gas?
I know its a big machine and it’s suppose to be a gas hog, but it must get probably 5 miles per gallon! Which is horrible… is there anything I can do to it… or is there anything that could be causing it to eat gas so badly?

make sure your tires are inflated enough and you could get a new intake (cold air or short ram) which might make it a little better. Don’t accelerate fast and when driving downhill drive in neutral.
Set the carb to run more lean.
There is not allot you really can do.
You could retard the ignition timing, although you will lose some performance in the process.
Properly tuning the engine is your only option
Firstly get it tuned up properly. You may well find there’s plenty of wear on parts all of which will reduce it’s efficiency. New plugs, points, rota arm may help. After that, rings, re-bore, check for slack in the distributor and so on.
Don’t carry any stuff you don’t need to (less weight = less gas).
Make sure the brakes aren’t binding at all.
Ensure it has fresh oil and the correct amount and new oil filter, new / clean air filter. Exhaust in good condition, not blocked or holed.
All these items are minor but add up to a lot after a while.
Tyre pressure correct for the load you carry.
