What can I do on my own to get my bike ready for the riding season?

2

Hello again,

My bike was sitting over the winter season with Fuel and oil still in the motorcycle. I just recently purchased a motorcycle charger to charge my battery. Besides that, what else can I do on my own to get my bike ready for the riding season without going to a motorcycle shop? I believe in saving money, especially since the gas prices are high and I don’t want to ruin my bike. Is their things are have to go to a motorcycle shop to maintain?

Thanks again for your feedback its always appreciated,

Ray

Nothing major…If it sat for 1 season the gas will be fine. I would change the oil&filter for the upcoming season. Do an overall check (tire pressure..any leaks..etc. battery etc…) you should be OK.

Depending on where it has been sitting there is a chance that the brakes could bind on, roll the bike to check they are free, then apply them while rolling to check they are working correctly – you do not want the engine running when you do this.

Check the tyre pressures and that the tyres have not flatspotted due to sitting with low pressure (this is not common with modern tyres and wheels).

Oil should not be a problem, let the engine warm up gently to get it circulating (you can try removing the plugs and turning the starter to get the oil moving). However, since you are doing other work changing oil and filters now might be a good idea. You should certainly do this if the oil has emulsified (gone to a milky coffee colour).

Fuel can be a problem, it can turn into a varnish, especially in carbs or injectors. If you are uncertain you should get a mechanic to sort this for you although it is not a very difficult job.

You should look at lubricating the chain, stand(s), pedal and lever linkages, and cables.

Check all the electrics are working.
