it wont run without it, the air fuel is pressurized and confined to create an explosion. without it, it would just burn
the more pressure ratio ==> more engine power produced
but we have a limitation caused by ” gas auto ignition ” that wont let us increase the ratio more than 12/1 or 13/1 ….
If the engine is designed properly (cylinder heads, ports and valves) more compression raises effiency and power. Keep in mind that as you raise the compression ratio higher octane fuel is required. A compression ratio of 11:1 is about all you can get away by using 93 octane fuel. If you squeeze the ratio on up to 13.5 :1 motors require leaded racing gasoline with true octane up to 115. Leaded fuel adds more carbon deposits in combustion chambers and spark plugs. Sunoco and VP makes leaded racing gasoline.
all engines compress the fuel air mixture to some extent for 4 stroke engines
1. the piston goes down draws air and gas into the cycliner
2. goes back up with the gas and air compresses it so when the spark plug fires there is a bigger explosion
3. explosion forces piston down causing power
4. goes up to push exhaust out
bigger compression means more horsepower
