What are some things that I can do to conserve gas and improve my miles per gallon?
I drive a 1986 Lincoln Town Car. I’ve had lots of work done on it such as tune ups, brake work, engine work etc. As you already know I do not have a lot of money to waste especially not on gas. I have no idea how many miles my vehicle gets to the gallon. How would I find out that information. Finally with the continously rising gas prices in full swing what are some things that I can do to save gas. THANKS!!

fill you tank and after driving 100 miles fill it again divide the 100 miles by how many gallons it took you to refill the tank. This will tell you your miles per gallon. to conserve gas avoid fast starts and excessive braking. check air pressure in your tires. drive without the AC going, etc
No fast starts or stops. Don’t floor it. Go the speed limit. Use cruise control when you’re able.
fill it up drive till you have to put gas in it again take the miles from the last fill up and the gallons used to fill it up and divide thats your mpg check to make sure tires are up to specs on air pressure and no rabbit starts off the line an easy foot will get you better gas milage
Make less trips and while u r out make ur trips.
Make sure you tires are properly inflated, at least 30psi. Make sure your air cleaner is clean. Don’t carry excess weight in trunk only carry things you are going to use that day.Avoid jack rabbit starts and reduce speed as you see a red light up ahead. Use a light oil like 5-30 it gives less engine drag. Don’t do high speeds especially up hills. Just be light on the throttle during your driving. Last word of advice is trade the Lincoln in for a Honda Civic!!You won’t be disappointed.
If I drive 580 mile trip, I can make it all the way on one tank of gas, driving at 60-65 mph. I only get 520 miles at 70-75 mph..That’s driving a Chevy pickup with a 350ci V8 with a 5 spd trans. I get 60 more miles a tankfull for 10 miles an hour.
no stop n go driving, try not 2 have ur engine running idle( like at the drive thru or traffic jams ), only drive when u have 2, dont drive around searching for cheap gas( u waste gas doing dat), make sure ur air filter is clean or new( a dirty one will reduce air flow which drains ur gas ), have ur fuel injectors serviced…
Like everyone said, avoid jack rabbit starts, use little throttle, avoid breaking when possible, make sure your air filter is clean, as a clogged one will rob power and gas mileage.
As for the tires, if you want to get better mileage, you actually want to over inflate your tires.
The recommeneded tire pressure is just that, recommended. When you inflate your tires to the specified PSI, you may notice they still look a tad flat. What this is doing is adding rolling resistance to the ground which is making your engine work harder to keep the car moving.
Over inflating the tires will cause them to fill out more, looking more round as they should be. This will give the least amount of resistance to the ground for the engine to work against, at the cost however, of giving a much stiffer ride, as the tires are adding more resistance to bumps from the ground.
I mayself always over inflate my tires, more specifically the fronts. At 32 PSI, the recommended for my car, the front tires were still very flat looking. I changed the psi to 36.5, and the flat look went away instantly, replaced by a perfectly round look with no sidewall squat.
you could park your car,and ride the bus or hitch hike, then there would be more gas for me. i think if you live in the city, you should be forced to take the bus. that way the people who live in rural areas would have plenty of gas. everything is so ,”at hand” in the city, don’t you think? i had a towncar and it got 14mpg,it weighed 6800 pounds and had a 460 cube engine. i’ll bet yours is pretty close. just kidding about taking the bus.
Someone already said it, but–do not use your car for storage or carry heavy things in the back! I used to do this, but taking them out has made a HUGE difference to my gas mileage. (I drive a hybrid.)
