We have a rule at work: When the company car gets to half a tank, fill it up. (company fuel cards)?
That would make sense when gas prices are rising, but how much difference would it make if we ALL did that with our own cars? People are driving slower, consolidating trips, etc. But not all of us are in the position to trade in our old gas-guzzlers for more economical models. How are you saving on gas?

If everyone did it, the extra weight of gasoline in all the tanks would decrease mileage and increase fuel use on average.
As an individual economic entity, you are slightly better off filling the tank today, if you are sure the gas will be more expensive the next time you buy.
Doesn’t matter what the price is. You still put in whatever amount of gas that you use. If you top it off twice a week at half or once a week at empty, it is still the same amount of money!
