I got rid of my car a little over a year ago, and got a bicycle instead.
Sure, it’s slower, and I have to dress to fight the elements, but at least I get to enjoy the moral high ground with respect to pollution, global warming, etc.
There are very-short-term car rental outfits opening up all over (major cities first); we just got our first in Ottawa. You can rent a car spur-of-the-moment, do whatever errand/trip you needed it for, and return it the same day (insurance, everything else included). It’s more affordable than keeping a car around all the time, and again — better for the environment!
The gouging oil companies can kiss my shiny metal– anyway… :-D
Don’t fall for those “save a bundle” gimmick items like that fuel vortex funnel thingy or whatever — if any of those gadgets worked, they’d be sold with new cars (what car manufacturer wouldn’t want to be able to claim better fuel efficiency than the competition?). Keep tires inflated to spec, and try as hard as possible to not change your speed (if you are approaching a stale traffic light, let off the gas as soon as you can and coast to a stop because you know it’s going to go red before you arrive; most (stupid/wasteful) people try to accelerate hoping they can make it, and sometimes, they kill someone in the process as they run the light (selfish idiots!). The biggest waste of gas involves making your car go faster than it’s already going, so if you tailgate, etc, you’re just costing yourself more in gasoline. Good luck!

The impact is it stresses me out to no end. I have quit taking weekend joy rides and I drive a lot slower, make sure my tires are inflated properly and read every article that concerns this subject. I am a single mom of 2 girls and I drive 25 miles back and forth to work every day and i would like to move closer to work to save on gas but I dont want to change my kids schools since we are hurricane Katrina victims and we moved 7 times after the hurricane. They have been through enough. It is pretty sad when you have to think about disrupting your childrens lives just to make a living due to the price of gas.

It really hasn’t made much of an impact on my life overall. My cars get pretty good mileage, so a $1.00 increase in gas prices isn’t the end of the world to me or my family (although it still sucks…). If it gets a LOT higher though, we might consider moving closer to work since we live about 20-30 miles from where we work…assuming we can sell our house in this piss-poor housing market…
I can see how someone driving a big truck, van, SUV, or older car that gets 16mpg or less might be hurting a lot more than I am though.

Im not honestly sure how one can “Save Money” maybe buy a smaller car, mine gets really good gas mileage, and plus, I try not to let my car go past a half a tank, that way I’m not having a heart attack when I go to put gas in my car, and it use to only cost me about $20.00 to fill it from empty to full, and now it seems to cost lots more…

well i’ve slowed down i use diesel and haul cars i average 5 MPG at 65 mph so going 75 is a thing of the past cost me $600.00 every day if i drive 700 miles or so i don’t have to be there till i get there so getting there faster just cost me more $$ and the freight is not going up like the price of diesel is
