Is it bad for your transmission to put it into Neutral when going to stop at red lights and then shifting it back onto 3-D and going when green comes up?
Just wondering, cause i’ve realized i’ve been doing it almost subconsciously as a way to ‘conserve’ gas.
I’ll stop doing so immediately If I find it’s not good for the tranny.

NOTE: I am aware that by going to neutral and braking it eats up your brakes more, because there is no engine deceleration while in neutral, when you brake. (dunno if that made sense.)

I drive a 2008 Scion tC, it’s a 4cyl, 4-speed Automatic transmission.

I got an automatic 05 acura tsx with the sport shift tiptronic thing in it. My question is, can you save gas using it? If yes, how should I use it to maximize my MPG? I’ve heard about shifting it to the highest gear when going slow, but how slow exactly? I don’t really suppose I should be in 5th gear while going 30 mph, am I? Also, does engine braking with it save gas?

I like driving my 2008 Lancer GTS in manual mode all the time, and im just curious if it saves gas or hurts/helps the transmission. I know driving a full blown manual is much nicer to the transmission.

I justed pured a Mazda Automobile with A manual transmission. So many people have said to me that with a manual transmission, I will save on fuel.
Is this so, and if so, how does fuel saving differ from an Automatic transmission? What is the concept behind this theory?

To save gas, I shift into neutral on downhills and coast for as long as I can. Because the engine has lower RPM’s while in neutral, I use less gas. However, I’ve been told that this is bad for the transmission. Is it?

If yes, does the gas money I save make up for the cost of damage to the transmission in the long run?

Ok so I have heard a few different theorys but i really want to know.
I have heard that using the engine to slow the vehicle down (e.g driving and just lift off the gas but leave it in gear – but remove my foot completely from the pedal and brake)
or do i need to pull the stick out of gear and use it to coast down.
Some states this is illegal but i am willing to do anything to save gas.
Second – shifting by bypassing the clutch – i do this occasionally – while shifting i get my rpm’s high enough that it just drops into the next gear.
third: how high should i let my rpms go? 3,000 is usually where i dont let it go any higher but sometimes it does go higher than this….

When i drive i often take the car out of gear and just coast in neutral to save fuel and rest my feet. I’ve been told that this can damage the car in some way but i fail to see how??? All im doing is free wheeling….

So, does coasting in neutral damage the car? If so how, when, and why.

I understand that the UK highway code advises against it, but then again i disagree with half of what they advise.

I’m trying to conserve gas by turning off my motor when I see the light in front of me turn red. I still like to use engine braking instead of the brakes. Will it be bad for my car’s motor to leave it in gear and use the engine to brake while the ignition is turned off? Vehicle is a ’98 Mazda B2500 (Ford Ranger) fuel injected, standard transmission.

Thanks in advance.
