I just read an article on saving gas and it claims that you add the equivalent of 20 cents per gallon for each 5 miles per hour you drive over 60 mph. But I’m just wondering what people think about getting to your destination faster to save gas vs. going slower to save gas. On the expressways that I usually drive on for long trips the speed limit is 70 mph and I will usually go as fast as 80mph. Do you think I’m wasting fuel or driving efficiently? FYI: I have a fuel efficient 2-door Civic, use cruise control as often as possible, limit the amount of extra weight in my car, and drive safely. What do you all think?

I’m both curious and keen to verify facts, however little-known, about the cheapest day to buy gas (or the best time to buy gas) for a proper price-to-performance balance on gas mileage. Looking for facts that are statistically true.

I hear a lot of times about people “saving money” by just filling the gas tank only half way up and keeping it that way. Why do people do this? How does it help in general?

I’m starting school and want to know the best way to drive to campus, while saving gas. According to mapquest the highway takes 21 mins. and 14.77 miles. The other way is much more direct and takes 27 mins. and 12.67 miles. I already know how to get to campus both ways but I’m wondering which would be fuel efficent? The second way has a speed limit of 50 and very few stop signs whereas the freeway I’d go about 65. I’m also a new driver so I think I will feel more comfortable, at least for the first month or so, driving the second way. I’m going to go both ways and see which I like more in the next day or so since it’s welcome weekend but I’d like others advice as well. Thanks!

There is a lot of debate about MPG ratings of cars but I have not seen anything which looks at the actual fuel used that takes into account the reduced time it takes if you go faster.
If I drove a car at 60mph for 60 miles it would take 60 minutes to complete the distance.
If I drove the same car at 90mph for 60 miles it would only take 40 minutes to complete.
Does the saving of 20 minutes driving time mean that driving at 90mph actually uses less fuel overall (despite the higher MPG usage) or does driving at 60mph use less fuel despite it taking longer?

I’m trying to find out which will be better no gas. i.e. If I drive for a shorter time, 39 miles in 53 minutes or would it be better to drive 1 hour 3 minutes and 30 miles?
Is shorter distance better or less time?
