Stopped

I was on a guided-tour, riding in a mini-van (automatic transmission). Noticed the driver when stopped (due to red signal or traffic) always shifted to neutral. I am wondering why he would do that – to save fuel economy? to ease up on brake pads? just a habit left over from previous manual-shift driving days? Whatever benefit he thought he might have had, it seems like it’s just extra work on the transmission. Just Wondering. Any ideas?? Thanks.

gas prices are rising.. i think motorsports should be stopped to lessen the demand on fuel..

someday the price per barrel of oil could reach $1,000 if we do nothing..
if motorsports stopped we could have saved millions of gallons each year..

we are the fault why gas prices are rising. i think its time to save fuel..

I heard it from a couple people about cars with automatic transmission. They say that if you put the car in neutral whenever you stop at a red light (and you know you will be stopped there for more than a few seconds), that it saves gas. It didn’t make much sense to me, but is it true?? And if so, how much gas will it save if most of my driving is city/suburban? I normally get 31-34 mpg. And does it cause any other problems that would make such a saving in gas not worthwhile?

In this age of high gas prices, I think you conserve gas if you shut your engine off whenever you are stopped more than 1 minute (excluding red lights). However, some people claim that it takes more gas to restart than was saved while the motor was off. Which method is more efficient ?

I have cut my driving in general down quite a bit, but I’ve also noticed that I rarely speed anymore in an effort to conserve gas. I now routinely drive city streets at 35 mph instead of my usual 40. Some people get ticked and drive around me, but I don’t care. They don’t pay my bills and the limit is around 35-40 anyway.

Say for instance you are stopped at a fast food place drive through and you want to conserve gas, should you throw it in park and let your foot off the break, or keep it in drive and hold down the break? What setting would save more gas?
