Most of the fuel used by a car is used to push the air out of the way. The faster a car goes, the more fuel it uses to go the same distance. It makes sense to slow down, but even with over $4.00 a gal gas, no one seems to be doing it.

I heard something along the lines that if you drive slower, you don’t use as much gas. But wouldn’t it use more gas since it takes you longer to get to your destination?

Given a relatively open road, equal distance, same driving skill etc.
I have heard conflicting advice from people, some saying faster, others slower. Some say it differs on fuel type such as diesel being better slower and petrol vice versa.
I used to believe in the ‘faster theory’ (via intuition) but I’m now conficted.

NB: ignore accidents or safety or being late.

My older sister told me a while back that if I accelerate the car faster and slow down much further back from the light (i.e. don’t brake until the last possible moment and coming to a stop that way), it wastes gas, and I was wondering how much truth there was to that. Does it make a difference, and if so how much?

In 1935 a patent was issued for a vehicle that used water as a fuel. In 1965 the US Army showed the vehicle of our future. It used water as a fuel. Some form of this vehicle is now being purchase by the US Army. It will take several years for similar vehicles to be made available to the public. The mission is to get everyone to drive 55 mph and the speed limit or a safe speed if below that so we can reduce our use of fuel and break our “addiction to oil.” Aircraft can fly slower by 20% and save at least that much in fuel consumption. It will save lives at home and in the “war.” We have NOT had this technology for many years because big business and politicians could make big money by selling oil. It is time for a change. The power is in the hands of the people when they are informed. The media should be on top of this. It is their job! HELP ! GOD BLESS AMERICA

Okay, my mom bought a new Lexus RX350
I told her that if she drives slower and at a constant speed, you’ll save more gas.
But she thinks that if you drive faster and get to the place you want faster, you save more gas.
Which is correct?
And does every car have its optimal mpg level?

I keep reading/hearing that to save gas you should drive slower.

I regularly drive much faster than the posted limit. 70mph here in MI (sssshhhh, don’t tell anyone). I can’t abide going any slower than that honestly!

Optimally 55mph will give you the best gas mileage. I find this speed ridiculous! Does anyone ever drive on the freeway this slow? If you have did you notice any gas savings?

I’ve heard in the news that some airline operators have instructed their pilots to fly their planes slower to conserve fuel, so I wonder what has speed got to do with fuel usage.
I’ve heard in the news that some airline operators have instructed their pilots to fly their planes slower to conserve fuel, so I wonder what has speed got to do with fuel usage.

Because for example, if a driver reaches a place 10kms away from start in 15mins on fast speed and if another reaches the same distance in 30mins on slow speed, then won’t the slow driver spend as much fuel as the faster driver as he drove for a longer period of time to the same distance as him?
Isn’t FAST SPEED & LESS TIME equal the same amount of fuel usage compared to SLOW SPEED & MORE TIME?
Please explain in detail as I’m confused.
Thanks.
