I am trying to figure out if I should get a Toyota Yaris sedan or spend the extra $10,000 and get a Prius. Will the prius pay off in the long run?
This would be a second car. We are going to get the prius or the yaris.

Hello everyone,
I am considering about selling my Mazda 626 (2002) and buy a Toyota Prius. The reason is, I heard Toyota Prius is more economical than a gasoline car. Is this argument true? Is Prius really more economical than a gasoline car? I searched internet but want to hear it from an owner. I mean ‘economical’ by the fuel and maintenance costs, not the price for car.
I drive the car only in city traffic, rarely go to highways. Addition, I don’t expect much from a car but economic stuff, since I am a graduate student and want to save money.
Thanks!
Thank you for your reply, I appreciate it. The thing is, I’ve found a Prius which is 6100$. Let’s say I will sell my Mazda for 4000$, and with taking some help from my parents the price is for “buying” the car is not important. Only thing I care is maintenance and fuel.
Thank you for your help again,

I live in Los Angeles, I drive mostly alone, work as an architect, and carry large stuff (Surfboard, furniture) maybe once a month:
The Prius Hybrid and RAV-4 cost about the same, $23,500 with MSRP. Prius has better gas mileage 48 city, 45 hwy. Compared RAV-4′s 19 city, 23 hwy.
I did the math: Prius@ 700 miles a month /46mpg X $3.55 per gallon= $54 a month
RAV-4@ 700 miles a month/22mpg X $3.55 per gallon=$113 a month…. So based on that logic I save $708 a year on gasoline w/ a Prius.
Should this justify buying a Prius ??

I don’t feel comfortable talking the Prius on long trips. We find the front seats cramped and uncomfortable and for long distance driving, I am not sure we would save that much on gas.
Also, have you driven to the point where the electric energy bars have been depleted and the gasoline engine takes over?
After we bought our car, on the Sierra-Nevada mountain uphill grade driving from San Francisco to Reno, the bars were almost depleted and the last remaining turned purple. What a fright — we turned off our air conditioner, opened the windows and managed to get over the mountains before the bars all disappeared from the display panel. Later the dealership did have us bring the car in and they checked and adjust the computer controls and I was assured the car would not stall.

I am looking to lease a car. (I know leasing is not a good value etc…). I am just out of school and can’t afford much. I was looking into getting a Kia Soul because it was cheap and safe. However, after seeing the Toyota commercials I decided to look and see what type of specials they were running. Right now you can get a 3 year lease for $209!
I started to crunch the gas number a little I concluded that if I drive 1000 a month with gas at $3.07 I would save $67.72 a month in gas. Applying that saving to the lease brings the monthly lease down to 161.28 (only $11.28 more than the Kia a month) and clearly the Prius is a must better and more substantial car. Additionally, if I did get the Kia I would end up paying more for gas bringing the monthly cost of driving the kia to $217.72.
Now I know that everyone says the hybrid premium doesn’t pay and you don’t recoup the premium until 3,4 or 5 years. But based on my math, for 11.28 extra a month I can drive a Prius instead of a kia soul. **Also my math is based on $3.07 a gallon (I live in So. Cal and it is already higher than that, the higher gas goes the more I save)**
So I guess my question is (1) assuming my math is correct wouldn’t it be smarter to get the Prius (2) Am I wrong? The money is going to come out of my pocket one way or another, shouldn’t it be on the car rather than the gas?

Hi All, I’m looking to hear from folks who have done some realworld AND consistant hypermiling with their prius.
Could you tell me what your “standard” hypermiling techniques are and what does that do for your MPG with your Prius?
I’m trying to find a realworld number that I can input to a spreadsheet. I’m really trying to justify buying a Prius but I’m having a hard time based on mpg alone.
Thanks for your help!
