Many years ago when there was a fuel imbargo imposed on the US the Government imposed a 55 mile an hour speed limit all over the country,so why with gas going out of sight dont they set the limit again,or maybe they like the added tax there getting with the high cost.Any thoughts out there or are we doomed till the end?.

With all the gas shortages. We all need to conserve. We did it for a long time during the all through the 80′s and part of the 90′s. It was the speed limit when I got my first driver’s licence.
I think it would be a good thing to help conserve, besides it is safer. When people slow down a little there are less accidents. So it would do two good things.

We had it back in the mid-70s in response to the oil embargo. Nowadays with gas prices so high, it makes sense to bring it back. When Bill Clinton repealed the law in 1995, gas was at about $1.09 a gallon. Times are much different now, obviously.
Here are some of the arguments I’ve heard against this:
1. “People won’t comply with it” (well then, start handing out more tickets, and increase the fines, and then that’ll teach people)
2. “States may ignore it” (well then do what the Nixon administration did, and withhold federal highway funds from the states if they don’t enforce it)
3. “People will be late” (that’s their problem for not leaving the house early enough)
Even with gas prices so ridiculously high, most Americans don’t seem too interested in slowing down to conserve gas, even as they b-tch about the high cost at the pumps.
Conservation is something Americans just don’t have in them. So we need to be forced. It’s for our own good.

This would conserve gas and drive down prices, I have heard this stuff about the manufactures responsibility to make cars that get better millage as the answer, That is unresonable in the short term.

Back when the price rocketed up in the 70′s the federal government lowered the highway speed to 55mph to save on gas. If the price of gas was to go down because of less demand goes down would you support the speed limit of 55 or 60 mph instead of 70 or 75?? Why or why not?? Ten points for best answer:)

ive notice a lot of people go 80 85 even 90 on the highway, they must be rich to waste all that gas. Gas is getting ridiculously high and people arent conserving. Do you go the speed limit or under?

with gas being so high in America, why don’t do what they did in the 70′s. lower the speed zone? I thought that was a great idea because it saved alot of lives as well as saved gasoline. those were the good old days when you could fill up and joy ride all day and it wouldn’t hurt your wallet. now i spend 55 to 60 bucks to fill up and . and its frustrating.

I have 25(it was 20 to 22) minutes of driving to my job. I was driving around 70mph and I’ve slowed down to between 63 and 65, but never more than 65. The difference in gas consumption is large on my car. I’m finding that it takes an extra day or two before I need to fill the tank again.
Is anyone else here doing this?
