Is it bad for your transmission to put it into Neutral when going to stop at red lights and then shifting it back onto 3-D and going when green comes up?
Just wondering, cause i’ve realized i’ve been doing it almost subconsciously as a way to ‘conserve’ gas.
I’ll stop doing so immediately If I find it’s not good for the tranny.
NOTE: I am aware that by going to neutral and braking it eats up your brakes more, because there is no engine deceleration while in neutral, when you brake. (dunno if that made sense.)
I drive a 2008 Scion tC, it’s a 4cyl, 4-speed Automatic transmission.

Because of the gas prices, I find myself doing anything to save gas. One thing I do is “park” at stop lights. (Most of the lights where I live are rather long). I know leaving the engine running still uses gas, but does it make a difference, as opposed to just stepping on the brake while in “drive”?
I drive a 2009 Toyota Corolla, if that makes a difference.

With an automatic gear box, will fuel be saved by going into neutral when stopped at traffic lights or other stoppage, and then selecting Drive when ready to move off? Will doing this cause any undue wear to the gearbox or anything else?

Also, does doing that harm the car in any way like shortening the life of spark plugs etc?
Thanks,

If people didn’t have to constantly stop at traffic lights, they would keep a more consistent speed, and use less gas overall.

What is the best way to save gas at LONG traffic lights?
I work as a delivery driver, so I drive A LOT. What can I do to save gas when I am delivering the food to the customer?
It takes about 3-5 minutes to get to their door, ring the doorbell, give them the food, take the cash and get back to my car.
What should I do during the time I am delivering the food?
Turn off the car?
Put it in Park?
Neutral with parking brake?
Any other ideas?

I was thinking about doing this thing where when I am about to stop at a light ahead of me, I put my car in neutral and cruise to the light and eventually stop. Then I stay there in neutral until the light is about to turn green again. Can this help save gas?

I’m wondering if I’ll conserve gas if I shift my car into neuteral while sitting at long lights and waiting in rush hour traffic. It’s an automatic transmission, a Pontiac Grand Am SE with a V6 engine.
Also: if this DOES conserve gas, is it worth it or will it be hard on the engine, transmission, etc?

I’ve heard from many people that one of the best ways to save gas is to turn off the car while idle at a light. I would only do this for those long lights in our town that are two minutes.
However, isn’t it AWFUL for your motor to keep turning off and on? The car is a 05 Camry, and we have an Accord as well- not big cars.
Any tips?

Yes, with fuel injected cars – you save money on gas by turning the car off anywhere you would be sitting and idling for any amount of time, but if you were to do that at every stoplight, you’d probably burn out the starter and/or ignition switch a lot sooner and it would probably cost more than you would have saved in gas with parts and labor to get it repaired.
