The core question is, when your foot is OFF the gas and you are coasting down a hill (auto transmission), is fuel still being burned at about the same rate it would be under a level ground condition under moderate throttle- AT THE SAME RPM? I understand there is more load going up a hill or even on level ground than going down but I am trying to understand again if going down a hill, with the RPM’s being the same, am I burning more fuel than I would be at an idle condition. Are the RPM’s only high because they are holding the car back, like a mechanically high RPM- does the computer know not to add fuel during this type of driving condition? The TPS (throttle positioning sensor) should know that no gas input is happening, so again, in this downhill scenario, when the RPM’s are typically staying up around 2, 300 rpm, is the vehicle burning 2, 300 rpm worth of gas (is fuel being pumped in more than at an idle rate) OR is the engine simply causing the revs to be higher, like downshifting with no additional fuel being burned (other than an idle-like rate of flow)? Does the computer know not to add fuel?

Here is why I ask…and my idea for saving fuel. I have noticed that if, e.g., I am coasting down a long mountain road, my RPM’s are about 2, 300. If I move the shifter into Neutral, they drop to about 800- a net savings of 1, 500 rpm. IF in fact I am saving 1, 500 worth of fuel savings, that would be significant. A simple “Green Switch” on the steering wheel could then be used to toggle the transmission into this “Neutral like state.” The system could be designed to automatically put you back in the range as soon as you hit the gas peddle- similar to how cruise control works- as soon as you hit the brake, it shuts off. Hills offer kinetic energy that could be used to save fuel. Logically, 1/2 of our driving time is spent going up hills and 1/2 of our driving time is spent going back down those same hills- assuming a person makes the same daily commute.

THANKS!
THANKS FOR THE ANSWERS- I am not concerned about going through more brakes and although I definitely agree that freewheeling would be dangerous, I am sure a simple solution could be designed to hold the car back on hills that did not involve using gas.

My core question remains, is fuel being added to the engine at 2, 300 rpm’s going down a hill at the rate of 2, 300 rpm’s or at the rate of idle (~800 rpm’s) even thought the tach shows 2, 300.

My idea seems to have promise but I might be wrong. One of the answers made me think to compare EPA estimates on modern AUTO vs. Manuals are they are about the same- in some cases the auto’s actually achieve higher fuel economy. There is no dramatic difference and I’m sure many people do use the technique of coasting down hills when they are driving manuals transmission vehicles in an attempt to save fuel.

THANKS FOR ALL YOUR GREAT AND HELPFUL ANSWERS!!!

I bought this car less than a week ago, and at $3.60/gallon for premium, I haven’t been stomping on it too much despite the 300+hp with a Dinan chip. I’ve been running it at very low rpms (2k) in higher gears to save fuel, especially around town. Is this going to prematurely ware out the engine/tranny?

I’m thinking of maybe selling my 335i after 5 years or so so should i use 87 octane fuel and if there are any problems then i just go use the warranty? I’ve heard that it is hard for the dealer to see that you’ve been using 87 octane fuel so the warranty won’t void. This would save some money.

I dont want to hear ” If you bought such a nice car then you shouldn’t be worrying about the price of premium fuel” !!!!

Is this a good idea?

I have ’05 Honda (automatic) which I usually shift (drop) to neutral for e.g. while exiting freeway and get back to Drive whenever I want, my understanding is this can save some fuel. Will this damage the engine ? Experts please clarify.
Folks,
Thanks for all replies. But please give me more specific and technical explanation. I appreciate your help….

If they fly slower they say they save fuel….but if they go slower it will take more time to get there=more fuel. If you go fast you use more power (n1)=more fuel…..

Maybe this might work when flying east/ you have a good tail wind, but what if you have a head wind? Pointless i think.

My husband has been looking at the Nissan Rogue to replace his truck. But since I won’t be getting paid for 4 weeks of my maternity leave, we’ve been thinking of alternatives while we save money for the Rogue. The other problem of course is that his truck is a single cab and therefore our baby will not be able to ride in it. So I started thinking about scooters (the street legal kind that can go up 55 mph). If we sell his truck, we’ll be able to buy a scooter and save the extra toward a down payment on the Rogue. Now here’s the deal, are guys completely anti-scooter? Is not masculine enough to be seen driving? The other problem I’m concerned with is driving it to my office and arriving sweaty/wet from rain/horrible helmet hair, etc. What do you think?
You people are complete morons. Obviously we are not going to put a baby on a scooter. We have another car. It’s a Dodge Caliber. The scooter would be for whoever is not home with the baby at the time.
The truck is 100% paid for. It’s a 2001 GMC Sierra. It’s pretty beat up (a couple of fender benders that never got fixed) and we’re just gonna take whatever a dealer or Carmax or wherever will give us for it.

High gas (and diesel) prices are the only thing that gets most Americans to stop wasting fossil fuels. This has been shown time and again in buying surveys, with V8 SUV sales picking up after a temporary lull in gas prices. Voluntary conservation seems to be perceived as a sign of economic weakness by the average bling-chaser.

There seems to be little serious awareness among Americans of Peak Oil concepts, or that oil peaked in the U.S. back around 1970 (including Alaska as a subset of total reserves).

Most people just seem to fixate on current pump prices, as if no other factors are in play except the moment. They get indignant when asked to conserve voluntarily, as if some birthright is being challenged. Is this a true assessment?

I’d give it slim to none, too, but only because there’s no clear way of exiting exactly where you want. I doubt accidents would be a prob, since redundant electronic controls are proving more logical than ppl. As for steel…well, there’s a LOT of steel in modern freeways.

John – I agree. A track underneath would make more sense. There’s an automated warehousing system somewhere that uses a High-Speed In-Flight Transfer system.

Products move onto and off of the flat-bed cars of this behemoth at pretty high speeds. Unlike Denver Airport’s toss-a-bag, it reportedly worked pretty well.

If these guys (mono-rail) have a way to quickly and safely switch from one freeway to another, then they may be onto something. Otherwise, hmm…

I need to downgrade my car to a smaller car that saves HUGE gasoline. I owe the Honda $5,900. Im pondering on whether I should trade my car to a smaller car at the car dealership, have them pay for the balance I owe and drive the smaller car without paying any cents.

OR

I sell my car to an individual and get about $8K to $9K and pay off the $5,900 I owe and buy a smaller car?
My 2006 Honda Civic doesnt really save gasoline! I was looking something like 40 to 60 MPG!
Im looking for an used small car maybe in the year of 1990 to 2000.
