I am turning 16 in 275 days. I get a car on my 16th birthday so i am pumped. My grandparents are buying me the car. It will be brand new and we look together at cars about once a month and last night we looked into mecury mariners. I like them but i really want a hybrid. Our family does our cont. to be green like change lightbulbs and conserve water but cars are def an exception we have diesels and all other forms of gas guzzlers. He told me that the hybrid isnt worth the extra money. He said it will take a long time to start breaking even for the extra 7000 dollars for the hybrid. I really want one though because i am into being green. What are some points i can use to convince him that the hybrid is the way to go?

Is there any real way to tell what MPG I will be getting before I buy the vehicle? I have read that some 05 civic hybrids get 30 mpg, and some claim they get 40-45, without having to ask the dealer to fill the gas completely, drive it around for 40 miles, and do back to the gas station and see how much gas I have to put back in, is there any way I can reset the Trip gauge so that it will automatically calculate it for me as I test drive the vehicle for say 30 or 40 miles? (I think the vehicle has this feature, I am just not sure how it works)? Thanks again, this will be a huge help, Currently getting 13 mpg in my truck and want to go to school, but it wont happen unless I get a good reliable gas conserving vehicle

do you think it really saves your money on gasoline? or will it possibly spend more money to replace the battery, repair, etc?
honestly i dont care much about the environment but my only concern is if it can truly be more economic and efficient way to save money than regular non-hybrid cars.

Besides the obvious “diesel is more then gasoline” that you can find online, is there any cost benefit analysis that shows that it is more efficient and money saving to go with diesel. I want to know if I would get the higher mileage out of diesel but spend more money because it costs more. it is kind of a moot point since i cant buy a diesel car in CA anyway…

the price…
say ford makes 1,000,000 cars a year (just a number) and they add something as simple as 2 lights over the license plate instead of 1, that light cost them a dollar…. in turn that cost them an unnecessary extra million dollars….
imagine if it had been something more complex
i.e. a motor (system) that cost 10 times as much

Actually, as gas prices rise, the ROI on the so-called “hybrid premium”, or extra cost for buying a hybrid, is down to about two years for the average driver. Cars like the Prius also have excellent resale value and low maintenance costs, so the Prius is a great way to save money in the long term!
The basic way hybrids work is having a second electric motor in addition to the gas engine to start the car moving and sometimes supplement the gas engine depending on the type of hybrid.
The electric motor gets its power from batteries which are recharged every time you brake/slow down. In a nutshell, braking engages a generator that collects energy from your deceleration instead of just losing it to brake pad friction like most cars.
There are other, more in depth tricks that hybrids like the Prius use, like turning the gas engine off when you stop, increasing aerodynamic efficiency through unique shapes and cutting down on the car’s weight by doing things like using a fuel bladder instead of a fuel tank, but the basics have to do with the electric motor and regenerative braking.
